Five Questions With Maryze

Montreal-based R&B-pop artist, Maryze released her debut single, “B.O.Y.” yesterday. She tells us that the single is about confronting yourself/ mental health, calling out toxic thoughts and patterns, and reclaiming power. We had a chat with her for a segment of Five Questions With, so take a few moments to check out the track, and find out more about this rising Canadian talent.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Maryze (real name Maryse Bernard). I’m a bilingual singer and lyricist based in Montreal, originally from Vancouver.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I feel like my music generally falls under the Pop-R&B umbrella, but has elements of so many other genres. I’ve always listened to a bunch of different styles so those influences come through: jazz, soul, indie rock, hip-hop, world music, electronic…It’s fun to explore eclectic styles from various places and make music that isn’t easily categorized.

When I write I try to be honest with myself, especially facing darker truths–to embrace and translate them into songs that hopefully resonate with listeners. My upcoming debut EP will be a compilation of emotional outbursts including love, anxiety, and defiance. Reclaiming myself and disconnecting from toxic situations is a big theme. I’m half French and write music in both languages, so the EP will be bilingual.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Since “B.O.Y (Prod. BrotherNature)” is my first single, I’m not playing any shows as Maryze quite yet. I want to take the time to figure out how it’s going to look and set up a proper multimedia performance. Projections/lights will be important and I plan on incorporating live musicians and some dance elements. It should be an immersive experience for everyone. I can’t wait to see how it shapes up once the EP is out later this year!

I currently perform with my electronic duo Seaborne and we’ve got a single release party June 22 at Casa del Popolo in Montreal.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

At this point, I guess it would have to be “B.O.Y”! But I’m currently working on a super sensual slow-burner called “Soft” with my friend producer Jordan Esau that I’m excited about.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

There are so many! These days I’ve been listening to DVSN, Milk & Bone, Daniel Caesar, Grimes, Peter Peter, Half Moon Run, and Kaytranada. Some up-and-coming friends in Montreal/Vancouver are also up there: Janette King, La Fièvre, Ciele, Grim Gardiner, Ulysses, Infinite…the list goes on. So much Canadian talent to discover!
