Vancouver based South African singer, Jessica Chaz has always had a love for music, ever since she was a child harmonizing with advertising jingles on television. Now, she is not only an incredible artist, also a proud #FemaleFounder within the Canadian music industry with the independent label, Moodlab Music, which she founded with Vanessa Moodley.
Today, we are happy to team up with Jessica to premiere her newest single, “Crossroads”, and talk to her a bit in our newest segment of Five Questions With.
“Crossroads to me was about the difficult times that I have faced in my journey over the past few years. Deciding what to hold on to or focus on in times of hardship or despair, the big question was … do I give up…. or do I focus on the many things and people I have to be grateful for, the love that surrounded me to continue on my path, to persevere, whether it be for my dream or anything else I had hoped for or worked towards.”
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone, my name is Jessica Chaz:) South African born (just like Charlize Theron baby:) and loving every moment in our new home here in sunny Vancouver. Singing and music, in general, has always been very important to me. It lifted me up when I needed it the most and am now so excited to be sharing my debut EP “Dreamin'” with you.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I grew up listening to a range of pop, r&b and gospel music… from Elvis Presley to Celine Dion to Beyonce. I think my music represents this mix..I ‘ve been working on my debut EP for the past 3 years. In style, the EP touches on some country, gospel and mainstream pop vibes – but it all sounds like me ..if that makes sense? In message – each song talks about a piece of the hustle… of keeping the dream alive amidst broken relationships and countless “you can’t do this”…our dreams are important and achievable and in my experience keeping hope alive is essential.. this is what I hope people will get from listening to the music… just like I did when I needed it the most.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes, I do. I am hoping to showcase in Toronto June 1st and planning for a promo tour later this year – please check out my website www.jessicachaz.ca or Facebook page to get notifications for shows. I would describe my live performance as authentic. Live performance is my favourite part of this process and I can’t wait to share the music with you all in this way soon!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
My favourite song from the EP is Crossroads. Something about the way the song came together and the vibe – it makes me dance and smile, and the words are so meaningful to me. I hope it makes people as happy as it makes me.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
There are so many talented Canadian artists! If I had to choose, I would say I am a huge Justin Bieber fan….. Don’t hate:) Drake for sure.. Alessia Cara ..I love her voice and message of beauty…. Celine Dion…. and I hope to sing with Michael Buble one day!
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
