ECMA 2018 takes place from May 2-6 in Halifax, NS. With so many talented East Coast artists up for awards, we knew we had to chat with some of them in anticipation of the big event! Every week from now until May 4, we will be chatting with a nominee. First, we spoke with the progressive metal band, Tactus and then Clare, Nova Scotia-born, Jacques Jacobus, Christian rock band, Rekoncyle, St. John’s based Earle and Coffin, Halifax based artist, Nicole Ariana and then New Brunswick’s own, Tomato/Tomato.
Now, let’s focus on Nova Scotia-based country artist, Makayla Lynn. Makayla is nominated for Country Recording of the Year at the 2018 ECMAs for On a Dare and a Prayer.
Take some time to check out the video for her single, “Joyride” below, and find out more about this talented young Nova Scotian country artist in our interview.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Makayla Lynn and I am a Nova Scotia-born singer/songwriter who splits my time between home and Nashville, Tennessee.
You are nominated for the East Coast Music Awards this year, what was your reaction when you found out you were nominated?
What are you most looking forward to at 2018 ECMAs in Halifax this May?
While I always look forward to the entire week of the ECMA’s with showcases, meetings with friends in the industry, panels and so much more, I would definitely say that performing on the ECMA Awards Show at the Scotiabank Centre this year is going to be my highlight of the week! I’m bringing my co-producer, Smith and acoustic player Mark Lonsway up from Nashville, TN to perform with me on the show and throughout the week! I can’t wait!
Do you have any memorable stories from previous ECMAs?
I can remember being 11 years old at ECMA week and being invited up to sing at the Member’s Lounge with Ian Sherwood on Saxophone. I sang a silly little song I had written and ended up getting a standing ovation! That was one of my first ECMA experiences and definitely one of my most memorable!
Will you be performing anywhere that you can tell us about during the 2018 East Coast Music Awards, Festival & Conference?
Other than my award show performance, you’ll be able to catch me at Sniggily Wiggily’s for the Country Showcase on May 4th at midnight and Radio ECMA at the Carleton on May 2nd at 9:20 pm.
If someone has yet to catch you live, what can be expected from your live performance?
I’m so excited to be sharing the stage with Smith and Mark this year as they are so incredibly talented! You can definitely expect to hear all kinds of music from my latest record and even some new original songs that we’ve been performing around Nashville lately thrown in the mix as well.
You are nominated up against many talented East Coast artists, who are you looking forward to checking out in Halifax?
Some of my favorite East Coast acts that I always love seeing at ECMA week include Ria Mae, Classified, Dave Gunning and so many more! I’m really looking forward to catching up with some artists and friends I don’t always get to spend time with throughout the year.
If you were asked to give an up-and-comer some advice, what would that advice be?
In giving any up-and-comer advice, I would simply say to dive in 100% in whatever it is you desire. Do not let anything hold you back from reaching something with all the effort you have. Good things come to the hard-workers!
Speaking of up-and-coming East Coast artists, we are always happy to find new artists to check out, can you recommend any up-and-comers for us to check out?
There is so much up-and-coming talent in the industry right now that I couldn’t name just one. All I can say is that for all we know, the next big act out of the East Coast might just be in elementary school still!
Now’s your chance to plug your new music, tours or anything else, what do you have going on this year?
I am so excited for this summer as I have a jam-packed tour schedule and you can find all of the dates and details on my website at www.makaylalynn.com! You can also find my latest record, “On a Dare and a Prayer” on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and many other digital download platforms. Check it out!!
Last but not least, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
There is nothing else I can say to my fans except “Thank You”. Love you all!
