Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Sure thing. Individually we are Ji Sharp (Vocals/Guitar), Yo Izumita (Bass), Don Letourneau (Keyboard/Organ/Synth) and Matt Maxwell (Drums). Collectively we are Road Waves, a Funk-Rock act from Niagara Falls.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
Our music has a pretty wide range of sounds and styles; although we call ourselves Funk/Rock we like to see the connections in all genres and find ways of binding them.
Usually, Ji will write the song or come up with the general idea/direction that it will go in, and then bring it to the band to conceptualize on and see where their mind takes it. After we get the skeleton of the song we start to nit-pick at things that need to change or awesome sections that could use more emphasis.
“My writing approach is very jazz-minded in that I try to leave a lot of the sections up for interpretation so that the song can be played in many different ways on any given night. I’m always encouraging the guys to follow their ‘mind’s ear’.” – Ji Sharp
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes, we’ve actually booked about 40 shows this year so far. Tour dates and poster can be found on our website.
We would explain our live performance as energetic exploration because we try to take a lot of risks while still maintaining a rhythmic foundation.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Now that’s a tough one. I think it would depend on your musical taste. ‘Stronger’ would probably be the one – it’s a straightforward, groovy rock song that most music lovers would enjoy. It will be on our new album, Red Sun Rising, which drops on May 11th.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
At the moment we would say Flat 5, After Funk, and Must Stash Hat. But we are constantly surprised at how many insanely talented folks there are in this country. We’d be listing em all day if we had the time.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
