Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello! I’m Shawn Kerr. I’m a singer-songwriter from Parry Sound, Ontario. Soon to be based out of Toronto. I was based out of Hamilton for a few years until I flew off to gig and live in a van for 6 months in New Zealand. I can’t wait to share the music I’ve been working on over the year. Starting with my new single In My Eyes.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
Good songwriting has always been my main focus. I’ve also recently found a love for the production side of music which has really opened my mind up when approaching a song. Most of my music out right now I would say is Alternative Folk but I’m trying to expand more. I think you can definitely hear that in my new single. I used to have song ideas/concepts, then I’d see how I could make it work with just me and a guitar. I’ve recently found that creatively restricting for me. Now when I have an idea, I try and think what instruments/elements would be best to give that Idea life and meaning.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I’ve got a few dates throughout March in Kingston, Hamilton, Collingwood and Toronto! It’s been a while since I’ve gigged so I’m very eager. I like to keep things intimate while adding some elements to push the experience beyond just a guy with a guitar.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Definitely “In My Eyes.” I wanted to create a song that felt like I was back in New Zealand hiking through the forest to mountains and experiencing something new at every turn. It’s got some hop but also some intimate moments that get thrown back and forth.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I listen to a lot of Kaytranada and Anomalie. Leif Vollebekk and Mac Demarco are also great songwriters. Lost Cousins are an up and coming band definitely worth checking out if you haven’t! Super talented guys with crazy potential.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
