Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
YOZA! Blessings and salad dressings, readers.
My name is Melodic Yoza; however, most people just call me Yoza. I also tend to get your attention by calling you, YOZA. It is my go-to word for almost anything. Hello/goodbye = Yoza!
Straight Yoza!! Everything Yoza!!
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
Yoza – do it for the music. I infuse reggae with different genres of music. My writing style is similar to Jimmy Cliff. I write about almost anything that feels right including my mistakes and inspirations. Basically, I put words to my reggae-soul-hop flow.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
My first show for 2018 will be at the ‘DiverCity Fest’ at Toronto’s Revival Bar on April 20. There will be many shows to follow, so stay tuned! When it comes to my shows, I like to create an atmosphere that will have my fans engaged the whole time. Being on stage is like home for me so I like to keep it energetic and fun for my YozaNation!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
My new single, “Celebrate” would definitely be my choice because the song encourages you to make the most of every single day you have, tell your loved ones you love them and appreciate the beauty of life. “Live life to its fullest, celebrate while we alive!” It’s a fun beat with an important message and that’s the kind of music I try to create.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Wowza… let’s see I love all the new talent that’s coming out of Canada for the last little while. Alessia Cara; her voice is #TheFuture , Daniel Ceaser, JazzCartier, the Weekend, Drake, Majid Jordan, Ammoye, Nefe. Magic and Alanis Morissette are some of my all-time favourite artists. Also, Joni Mitchell, White Horse, Arkells, Nelly Furtado – Bottom line is Canada has a lot of very talented artists.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
