Rose-Erin Stokes is a folk singer-songwriter from northern Ontario. Her album Wherever I Go was released on January 26, at which point Rose-Erin began her month-long tour across Ontario.
Wherever I Go is a collection of 11 love songs, and it’s truly a hidden gem. It starts off with “Always On My Mind,” a song that sounds the way nostalgia feels. When the drums begin they echo the rhythm of a heartbeat. The guitar lines are filling but not contradicting, and the track ends with ambient wind chimes, which aren’t jarring, despite this being their only presence in the track. This song, much like the rest of the album, is a song that makes the listener feel quiet and introspective.
My own personal favourite song on the album is “Wanderer,” a song filled with lyrics so lovely I rewound the track several times to hear them again. Select favourites include “maybe I’ve seen what there is to see/maybe I’m all that I can be/maybe you’ve had your fill of me” and “so if you find somebody who feels like home/hold them closely/don’t let them go.”
Also notable is the song “Love Like This,” which has a faster pace than a lot of the other tracks, and sounds fun and bouncy. It also has the hopeful and beautiful lyric “open up your heart/open up your mind/a love like this doesn’t happen all the time/we could spend our whole lives getting by/or you could just fade into me tonight.”
Overall, Wherever I Go is an album filled with Rose-Erin’s pretty vocals and authentic lyrics, tied together with great production and arrangements. I would recommend it to fans of Dodie Clark and early Taylor Swift. I hope to catch her singing live someday soon.
