Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, one of the most treasured traditions that Christmas can bring is the exclusive music that is created just for this special time of year. From original Christmas songs to some of the best holiday albums, we will deliver the best in Canadian music to you right up until Christmas.
Here is Part One of Canadian Beats: Countdown to Christmas that we hope will bring you some musical comfort and joy.
“Christmas In The Country” is from Kelley Mooney’s first Christmas album, Caroling. Kelley Mooney is a singer/songwriter from Iona, Prince Edward Island. Released in November 2017, Caroling is a collection of some of Mooney’s favourite Christmas songs and carols, with two self-penned Christmas tracks for the album. “Christmas In The Country” is a feel-good Christmas song and one you will want to give a listen to this year.
“My Favorite Time of Year” is the holiday-inspired single from pop artist Schyler London. London who released her debut EP Love Rebellion in October 2017 takes her delicate pop sounds and creates her own piece of Christmas music magic with “My Favorite Time of Year.” As a newcomer, London shows off her skills as a young artist and “My Favorite Time of Year” is some quality holiday pop music.
“Christmas in the Sun” is a brand new single from country music’s Gord Bamford just in time for this holiday season. Bamford is one of Canadian country’s most respected artists and has consistently graced us with Nashville rivalling country music. “Christmas in the Sun” is a fun toe-tapper, with sounds of the season, the beach, and Bamford’s traditional vocals. A fun playlist add for both country music and Christmas music fans alike this year.
“Mama’s Christmas Cookies” is the newest Christmas single from music newcomer Jessie T. “Mama’s Christmas Cookies” was written by Jessie T, Jamie Warren, and Carrie DeMayer. Jessie T released her debut album Reckless Heart, in September 2016. Released now to radio and spreading some holiday cheer with her latest Christmas single; “Mama’s Christmas Cookies” tells the story of the heart’s yearning to be back home with family during the season and touches on the memories made in mama’s kitchen each year.
“Christmas Alone” is the Christmas single from Skye Wells. Skye Wells is a one-off side project of the Canadian indie rock band, Half Moon Run. Band members Devon Portielje and Conner Molander created the track exclusive to the holiday season and are encouraging their fans to donate to the Red Cross disaster relief fund in support of their new single. “Christmas Alone” is available to stream now on all major platforms and take a listen to for yourself.
“Too Broke For Christmas” is a new Christmas single from Brenda Dirk. Poking light at some of the more fun traditions that we enjoy around the holidays, Dirk offers up a fresh holiday track with her strong country vocals. Dirk released her debut single “Shades On” earlier in September 2017 digitally and to radio. “Too Broke For Christmas” is available now for radio and you can stream it online.
“Christmas At My House” was released by Jessie Farrell in December 2007. Though the song is almost 10 years old, it is still one of my favourite holiday originals. I love “Christmas At My House” for Farrell’s holiday message and a reminder to take a break and just enjoy the holidays as they are. Farrell who is known for her hit singles “Fell Right Into You” and “Let’s Talk About Love” released two children’s themed albums and is currently working alongside CBC Kids Television on their series, Scout & The Gumboot Kids.
“I Wouldn’t Want Christmas Any Other Way” is another one of my favourite Christmas music originals that have lasted throughout the years. Carolyn Dawn Johnson is one of country music’s most respected artists. Released in December 2007, the song shows that Johnson can write anything and turn it into a great song. “I Wouldn’t Want Christmas Any Other Way” is another upbeat song that is great to throw on for any of your holiday traditions. It is heartwarming and shares a positive message of how great this time of year can be.
Music has touched my soul since day one. Whether it is performing or sitting down with some of the biggest names in music, I can always be found sharing my profoundly tender affection of music with anyone who will listen. Being a music journalist has allowed me to expand my knowledge of music and interact with some of my biggest childhood heroes. From days of radio broadcasting to sitting back, kicking off my cowboy boots and sharing my adventures with likeminded music fans online has been nothing short of amazing. Canada is full of true musical talent and I look forward to continuing to share my adventures in music with you.
