Sometimes it takes a second listen before you truly appreciate a piece of art. Whether it be on the wall in the streets or in your ears, everyone appreciates are differently and on their own time. For me, listening to The Elwins new album Beauty Community the first time just gave me a “meh” sort of feeling. I felt like I had already heard it before and I wasn’t overly impressed with what they had provided.
However, before you bite my head off, my opinion did change once I took the time to really take a listen. This local Ontario band managed to change my mind on the fly. Even though they are classified as “alternative” or “rock-pop”, I feel like they have something else in there that just can’t be fully described. When I took the time to listen again, I got a nostalgic sort of feeling; instead of hating the fact that I’ve heard it before, I revelled in the fact it reminds me of music I would listen to in my high school days. Each song brings a different vibe to the table that allows the entire album to be entirely dynamic and different yet still the same.
In one track I’ll hear more of a dance-pop vibe that reminds me of today’s hitmakers DNCE, while in another song I hear a more punk-rock-pop sound that brings me to remember the likes of Blink-182. Don’t think I’m done there though. In other songs, I can even get a little taste of The Arkells and maybe even a little bit of Imagine Dragons. I think that’s why the album grew on me as I listened to it more. When I heard all these different aspects come together it became unique and special to me.
It took me awhile to pick a song that really jumped out at me. After a while, the track “Never Felt So Good” and “Hey! Yeah You!” stuck out to me. They’re both fun and upbeat and overall feel-good songs that you can’t seem to get enough of. Each song brings their own feature to the 13-track album, but these ones were my favourite.
So make sure you take a listen, and maybe even a second listen. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it just as much as I do right now! They are also currently on tour right now, so check out the tour dates below to see if they’re coming to a city near you!

My name is Taryn and I am a writer and music enthusiast from Mississauga, Ontario. I am a graduate of Journalism/Media studies from the University of Guelph-Humber, and while I’m currently pursuing other career options, writing is still one of my greatest passions. And combining that passion with my deep love of music was an obviously easy choice. I’ve been writing with Canadian Beats for awhile now and I’ve loved every moment. When I’m not working or writing for CB, you can usually find me in the kitchen baking, writing, at a concert or travelling to new (and old) places with my favourite people!
