Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Danéa and I’m a 20-year-old singer/ songwriter from Alberta, Canada. I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember. The first instrument I learned to play was the piano and from there I went on to teach myself guitar. It wasn’t until I was about 10 years old that I realized I could make music with my voice as well. Soon after that discovery, I started writing my own songs and the rest is history.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My music has always reflected my life as well as my day to day feelings and experiences. I know that, as a listener, I really value artists that tell their own story through their work so I try to do the same. I think the human experience is a complex one with so many different dimensions. It’s that complexity that I really try to convey in my lyrics. Recently I’ve been lucky enough to work with the amazing Jey Blaq of ChuBlaqa Productions (Music Production Team of Chu & Jey Blaq). His visceral beats are so poignant and reflective, they capture every emotion that I’ve ever wanted to put into my sound. In the studio, I often joke that I don’t know how he gets into my head – that’s how incredible he is at translating my thoughts into melodies. There is definitely an awesome synergy between the two of us as we work so well together. I’m so grateful for all the ways he’s shaped me as a writer and influenced my style. (check out ChuBlaqaProductions.com)
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I don’t have any shows scheduled right now since I’m in school full-time. When I perform, though, I like the vibe to be chill. For me, music should be a shared experience so I like to treat my performances as almost an open mic night scene. I want everybody up and singing with me, I want us all to share the sound and make music together. That’s what its all about.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
If I could only suggest one, I think I’d tell people to check out ‘Escape’ off of my June 2017 debut EP release ‘The Beginning’. That song is really my soul encapsulated at this point in my life. It’s hard being a young person in this world. It seems like everyone has an idea of who you should be and what you should be doing with your life and sometimes you just need to get away. That’s what Escape is- it’s that validation that someone out there knows exactly how you’re feeling. It’s not particularly uplifting, not really an anthem or an “everything is gonna be okay” bop but I think it tells the truth. That sometimes, all we can do is pray for an escape. Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I grew up on Shania Twain and honestly, she’s still probably my all-time favourite Canadian singer. More recently though I’m really into The Weeknd, Neil Young, Lights and The Rural Alberta Advantage. We’ve got some incredible talent up here, it’s so hard to narrow it down.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
