Who: The Foreign Resort, The Shyness of Strangers
When: September 13, 2017
Where: The Hideout, Toronto, ON
The Shyness of Strangers is Vadim Kristopher, a Polish born Canadian who spends most of his life adrift, but comfortable alone. Exploring sonic landscapes with repetitive themes through corridors of human emotion, loudly. Drawing inspiration from life’s more melancholy moments, but deafening the sadness as his music turns the sorrow into celebration.
The Foreign Resort are Denmark’s finest musical export of post-punk and dark new wave, led by singer and songwriter Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen. The band combines the shadowy mysticism of The Cure’s Pornography era with a driving production aesthetic akin to LCD Soundsystem. Intricate reverb-enveloped guitar lines glide over Steffan Petersen’s motorik bass and Morten Hansen’s powerful drumming, all while Mikkel’s taut and sincere vocal delivery demands your attention.
Having toured with The Raveonettes, A Place to Bury Strangers and Swervedriver, The Foreign Resort has also shared bills with bands like DIIV, The Soft Moon, The KVB, Slowdive, Minor Victories and, most recently, Cold Cave. The trio has toured relentlessly, addicted to the allure of America’s lost highways. Since 2010, the band has been rigorous in playing more than 400 shows across North America and Europe with performances at several festivals incl. SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, Wave Gotik Treffen in Germany, Canadian Music Week 2017 and POP Montreal 2017.

I shoot live music performances and concerts. I love the excitement of entering a venue, knowing that I’ll be photographing a concert and enjoying the energy of the crowd. There’s nothing like being in a venue and looking at the expressions on the faces of people who are all transfixed by the talent onstage. I shoot about 120 shows each year, averaging 2 bands per show, as well as several all-day and weekend festivals in and around Southern Ontario. From the large venues to very small ones, bright lights or barely lit stages, I hope that my photos capture the enjoyment the artists have in doing what they love to do.
