Who: Alessia Cara
When: August 9, 2017
Venue: SaskTel Grandstand, The Saskatoon Ex
Where: Prairieland Park, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Brampton-born singer-songwriter Alessia Cara performed at the SaskTel Grandstand for the second night of free entertainment at The Saskatoon Ex for Kids Day. She’s a multi-award winning performer with three singles that have reached the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100, and the line to get into the show was endless. This was her first time performing in Saskatoon and the crowd was excited to see her!
Alessia Cara started the show with her song “I’m Yours” which got everyone into her set already. Since the show took place at a fair, fans began throwing items such as Mardi Gras beads and stuffed animals at her which she would catch and set on the stage. Before many of the songs, she gave an introduction dedicating the song to certain people and explaining what it was about – such as “Scars to Your Beautiful” being dedicated to all the girls and those who are not so confident. Before her slow song “River of Tears,” Alessia stated “you can make yourself happy without anything or anyone.”
Alessia Cara performed “Stay” which she recorded with German producer Zedd, and a cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Dreams,” which she said was for all the parents there with their kids. She also performed “How Far I’ll Go,” which she recorded for Disney’s animated film Moana. Earlier in the set during her performance of her first big hit “Here,” she introduced the crowd to a new verse within it about it being “3 years later.” She ended her hour-long set with “My Song” and jumped down off the stage to say hi/bye and high five everyone along the front row at the barricade.
There are still three nights of great music left this week at The Ex, beginning at 8:30 each night! The Strumbellas are playing tonight, with Blue Rodeo tomorrow night and Big Sugar on Saturday. It’s only $16 for admission to the park, or $26 for a two-day pass, and you’ll have a night full of great entertainment!

I’m Shayla, and I was born in Saskatoon but moved to Halifax in 2013 for University, and since decided to stay here for a while. I recently received a Bachelor of Design, after studying photography for a year or two as well. I love everything about music and how it has the ability to bring so many people together from across the country and even the world. My passion for music is one of the reasons I moved East to pursue a photography and design career, as I would love to do graphic design and photography within the Canadian music industry.
