Countdown to Larlee Creek Hullabaloo – Interview with Samantha Martin

Larlee Creek Hullabaloo is known as the “little festival that could”, and it’s not hard to see why when you see the immense talent that it offers. Larlee Creek Hullabaloo takes place in Perth-Andover, NB and brings out the best of the best when it comes to East Coast talent! We are excited to team up with the festival to present you with a series of interviews that we conducted with some of the performers. To start things off, we chatted with Halifax based Christine Campbell, and now it’s time for Toronto based Samantha Martin of Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar! Enjoy!

First off, care to introduce yourself to the Canadian Beats readers?

My name is Samantha Martin – I am the band leader, singer / songwriter, and businesswoman behind Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar

Larlee Creek Hullabaloo may be a “little” festival, but it’s jam packed with talent, what does it feel like to be involved in this particular festival?

I am incredibly happy to be part of Thursday night’s programming! I love small festivals in supportive communities because everyone has a personal sense of pride in the festival and the artists are able to make a personal connection with the audience.

Are there any specific artists/bands that you’re excited to see at Larlee Creek Hullabaloo?

We unfortunately have to leave that night to head to Lunenburg, NS to perform Friday afternoon so we won’t be able to check out anyone else. Overnight drives are the worst – wish us luck! However – I am big fan of Erin Costelo, The Wooden Sky & Pretty Archie – so I would check them out if I could!

Are you performing at any other festivals this summer that you’d like to tell us about?

We are headed to Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival right after Larlee Hullabaloo, and other than that we have a few Ontario based festivals this summer (shelter valley folk Fest, Markham Jazz Festival to name a couple). We are recording a new record this summer so we pretty busy in that regard. Next year will be a big summer – so I am happy to take it easy (in comparison to the last 3 years) this summer

If someone has yet to see you live, how would you describe your live show?

We are soul, blues and gospel, we have lots of energy live. There will be a mix of new tunes, old tunes and cover tunes… so I think there is a little something for everyone!

If you were only able to recommend ONE song for a new listener, which would you choose?

“Addicted”! Catchy fun tune!

Here at Canadian Beats, we’re all about Canadian talent, who are some of your favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I really love so much, but – check out Begonia , Tanika Charles and/or The Split if you like soul tunes,  Joey Landreth, Suzie Vinnick, paul Reddick and/or Sean Pinchin if you like blues, and if you like a gospel edge check out Dione Taylor. I am also producing and working with a very new band Moscow Apartment (two 15 year old young ladies from Toronto) – they are super talented, and catchy pop/folk songwriters!

What’s up next for you?

Record, Release, Tour, Repeat. Preferably every 2 years. Lol – I’m focused on making a great new record, getting everything ready to release, making big plans to tour – and then start writing again for the next record.
