Today is the big day! Cavendish Beach Music Festival begins and everyone is excited to get their festival fun started! As we’ve done in past years, we have been counting down to the big weekend in the form of interviews with some of the Canadian performers! Our first interview featured the lovely Jessica Mitchell, then the guys from Johnson Crook, followed by country sweetheart, Madeline Merlo, and yesterday we had some time with country duo, Endless Summer! Today, we have our final interview of the series with Calgary’s own, Sykamore! Enjoy the interview, and we hope that you have a blast this weekend if you are lucky enough to be attending CBMF!
First off, care to introduce yourself to the Canadian Beats readers?
Hi! My name is Sykamore and I’m a farmer’s daughter from Calgary, Alberta. I like to write songs and sing them to you.
Cavendish Beach Music Festival is one of the biggest Country festivals around, how does it feel to be a part of this event?
I feel very honoured to be part of this festival. I’ve been hearing about it for years and have lots of friends who have played it and they tell me nothing but good things. To finally take part in such a legacy festival alongside some of my musical heroes is an amazing opportunity – it’ll also be my first time in PEI so I can strike that off my bucket list!
You are one of many extremely talented artists on the lineup for Cavendish Beach Music Festival, who are you most excited to check out at the festival?
Well thanks, first of all. Secondly, there are a ton of fantastic players this year so it’s hard to pick just one – but an act that I have yet to see live and one that I greatly admire is Little Big Town. They are the definition of ‘artist(s)’ in my mind. I love their creative loyalty and the way they push to perfect, push to be excellent. Their live show would be amazing to watch.
Are you performing at any other festivals this summer that you’d like to tell us about?
I am! After this I will be flying back to Alberta to play Seven Music Fest in St. Albert, as well as Red Truck in Vancouver and Boots & Hearts in Ontario. Super pumped for this summer.
Describe your live show using only 5 words.
Honest, fun, fresh, interactive, genuine.
If you were asked to give an up and coming Canadian artist some advice, what would that advice be?
Break the mould. Don’t compromise your art. Trust your gut.
In honour of Canada’s 150th, who are you favourite Canadian artists/ bands?
Tegan & Sara, Metric, Mother Mother, LIGHTS, City & Colour, Dean Brody, Paul Brandt, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Drake. Haha I could go on.
What’s up next for you?
I have an EP coming out that I’m very excited to share. Look for it in the coming weeks.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
