From July 7-9 in Cavendish, PEI country music fans will be in their glory as they attend Cavendish Beach Music Festival, which as usual features some incredible country music talent. As we’ve done in past years, we are counting down to the big weekend in the form of interviews with some of the Canadian performers! Our first interview featured the lovely Jessica Mitchell and now we chat with the guys from Johnson Crook. Enjoy!
First off, care to introduce yourself to the Canadian Beats readers?
Johnson Crook is comprised of Noel Johnson (Vocals, Guitar), Jared Craig (Bass, Vocals), Nathan Crook (Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals) and Trevor Crook (Drums, Vocals). We all reside in Toronto but are from all over the place! Noel is from Cochrane, AB. Nathan and Trevor are from Minnedosa, MB and Jared is from Greensburg PA. We started this band after meeting during Canada’s Music Incubator Artist Entrepreneurship program through Coalition Music and became fast friends. We started playing and writing together and decided to join forces to create Johnson Crook. Three years later, here we are!
Cavendish Beach Music Festival is one of the biggest Country festivals around, how does it feel to be a part of this event?
Trevor: It’s so amazing to be making our East Coast debut at such a renowned festival and we’re honoured to be sharing the bill with so many incredible acts.
Noel: This is also all of our first time going to PEI! We have heard so many amazing things and can’t wait to get the full experience!
You are one of many extremely talented artists on the lineup for Cavendish Beach Music Festival, who are you most excited to check out at the festival?
Jared: So many great acts! Of course Zac Brown Band and Little Big Town. We also can’t wait to catch some acts we had the opportunity to share the stage with this year like Jessica Mitchell, JJ Shiplett, Sykamore, and The Lovelocks!
Are you performing at any other festivals this summer that you’d like to tell us about?
Noel – We sure are! After Cavendish we’re playing Budweiser County Fair in Toronto on July 14th, then off to Minnedosa to play Rockin’ The Fields on August 4th. We have a few other great gigs opening for The Road Hammers at Kempenfest on Aug 6 and for Corb Lund at the Heritage Music Festival on Aug 11th. Check out our full schedule at www.johnsoncrook.com
Describe your live show using only 5 words.
WE WILL ROCK YOU….HARD
If you were asked to give an up and coming Canadian artist some advice, what would that advice be?
Noel – Write, write, write and play as many shows as you can. Work on your craft and speak from the heart.
Trevor – I agree, always be genuine and LOVE what you do! People can tell if you’re phoning it in.
In honour of Canada’s 150th, who are you favourite Canadian artists/ bands?
Jared – How much time do you have? There are too many to name off. We put together a Canada 150 Spotify playlist so we encourage you to check out of some of our favorites! http://smarturl.it/JC150playlist
What’s up next for you? Noel – Our debut album comes out August 4th followed by some great festivals and shows!
Trevor – We released an EP on May 5th but other than that we didn’t have much material out yet and still managed to get some incredible gigs thanks to our team at Coalition Music and Paquin Artists Agency. With the album out this summer, we can’t wait to see what opportunities arise in the wake of that!
Jared – In the meantime, we’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing while having a great time to boot!
