Toronto, ON based High will be releasing their EP in the near future, but have recently release a video for their single, “Alright” and we thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to them. On top of this, the band has some awesome shows coming up, so check out our newest segment of Five Questions With! Enjoy!
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi…we’re High. Rich, Dave, Tim and Tarun. Four guys out of Toronto who somehow each managed to find three other guys equally as obsessed with a shitload of different music styles. Can we say shitload? It’s really the most accurate unit of measurement in this instance.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
From day one, the idea has been to write whatever we may be hearing in our heads without the constraints of trends, genres or ‘I wonder if the radio will like this?’ (To quote Pantera, “The trend is dead.”) Our music tends to be rooted in alternative, but anything from harder sounds to pop to reggae or folk can sneak in there depending on the day. We just go where the song tells us to, you know?
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We’ve been selected to perform at NXNE, which is always a great time. We’ll be playing the Bovine on Thursday June 22. As for our live show? We’re always going for that emotional release. Some of it is pure joy and celebration…and some of it is catharsis to get rid of that shitty ex’s hold on you. Either way, we’re trying to get us all in that room to rise above, to get uplifted…and yeah, to get high.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Our single ‘Alright’ is really unique, and as the very first song of the project, it’s a bit of a ‘Yeah, we’re going to do what we feel like’ rally cry. But I don’t think there’s any getting around the fact the first High song someone should hear is probably the song named ‘High.’ Our EP won’t be out for a month or so, but since Canadian Beats was awesome enough to cover us new guys, we figured we’d toss up an exclusive preview of that tune. Thanks Jenna!
