The Road To Sawdust City Music Festival – Jessica Mitchell

This August long weekend (August 4-6),  Gravenhurst, ON is the place to be. Of course I’m speaking of the inaugural Sawdust City Music Festival. We are excited that we have been given the chance to showcase some of the amazing talent taking part in the festival, we are doing a series of interviews throughout the next few months. First, we spoke to The Julian Taylor Band, then Bet Smith of Bet Smith & The Currie Brothers. Today it’s all about country singer-songwriter, Jessica Mitchell!

First off, care to introduce yourself to the Canadian Beats readers?

My name is Jessica Mitchell and I’m a singer-songwriter.

Sawdust City Music Festival is in its inaugural year, how does it feel to be a part of this event?

I’m really excited.  The level of talent and incredible mix of genres is going to make for an amazing first festival.  I also really love being a part of first time things like this.

You are one of many extremely talented artists on the lineup for Sawdust City Music Festival, who are you most excited to check out at the festival?

Of course Jim Cuddy if I get the chance.  He’s such a staple to the Canadian music scene and never disappoints.

Are you performing at any other festivals this summer that you’d like to tell us about?

I’m happily returning to both Cavendish and Boots & Hearts.  I get to bring my band this time so both travelling with them and playing with them is going to be a wonderful experience.  I’m also looking forward to returning to British Columbia on Canada Day to play in Castlegar for another inaugural festival, Kootenay Country Fest with George Canyon.  Lots on the go for shows.

Describe your live show using only 5 words.

It will give people feelings.

If you were asked to give an up and coming Canadian artist some advice, what would that advice be?

Be yourself, always.  And try to spend as much time getting to know yourself before rushing into this career.  It can be scary, lonely and tumultuous, but when the right things come along at the right times it’s such a rewarding feeling to experience it when you’re settled into your own skin.

Who are your favourite Canadian artists/ bands?

I grew up listening to people like Chantal Kreviazuk and Jann Arden.  I love Donovan Woods.  There’s such a brilliant Canadian singer-songwriter movement happening right now and I’m happy to be apart of it.

What’s up next for you?

Spending the summer playing out.  I can’t wait to be on the road.  Playing live is something that is the most inspiring part about being a musician.  There’s nothing in the world like it.
