Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Kim Doolittle and I have been a musician my entire life, professional since the age of 10. I am steeped in the Roots Blues, Alt Country and Maritime Folk as I hail from Nova Scotia and grew up singing around kitchen tables. Lots of trad music in those days and hand me down songs. I play guitar, harp and uke. I like to tell a good Story, much like my forefathers and really relate all of the music to real life and to finding out the origins of the gems I choose from others
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style..
Well, I love organic, authentic, melodious songs. I started writing at age 15 and have penned a lot of tunes but I feel most at home with co-writing. Ken Whitely was simpatico with me and we managed to pen 7 of the 11 songs on the CD with very little effort. He taught me a lot about the subtlety of song writing and the small changes you can make to take a song from 75% complete to 100 finished. He taught me to cull words. Suzie Vinnick and I penned a tune on this as well in one afternoon. I would say that I am roots and story influenced. I search for depth and introspection in writing so that I can resonate with the people in the audience on a human level, not just as a performer.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Upcoming shows, Hughs Room on June 8, 2017 with Ken Whiteley, Rob Quail (Jeff Healey Band), Bucky Berger, Victor Bateman, Pat Carey (Downchild) and Tom Leighton. After that several house concerts in Southern Ontario, The Rotary Rib Festival in Peterborough Ontario on July 8, 2017, Canada 150 Victoria Park Bandshell in Cobourg, Ontario, and Riverfest in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia on July 15, 2017. More dates are lining up very shortly. Check my site www.kimdoolittlemusic.com for info.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Into The Blue and Let The River Run. Into the Blue is literally about coming through all of the colors of life be they dark or light and moving into the clear blue sky. It is a “happy” blues song. Ken and I wrote it in minutes, it was almost channeled I swear.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Catherine McClellan, Ken Whiteley, Dave Gunning, Morgan Davis, Matt Minglewood, Steve Strongman, Suzie Vinnick to name a few of many. Gratefully, there are many.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
