Winnipeg, MB based band, Sebastian Owl has just released their 5th album, From The Ashes. We had the chance to conduct a Five Questions With segment with frontman, Blair Atkinson. We hope you enjoy learning more about Sebastian Owl. You can also check out their video for “In Between” below.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Blair Atkinson, frontman for Sebastian Owl!
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My writing style is very self reflective, though I try to filter that through the character of Sebastian Owl. The old question of ‘What comes first, lyrics or music,’ (the old Chicken and the egg nugget) usually I find a melody first and try to write from there. I have many ten second snippets of me singing melodies into my phone at work.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We have a few Local (Winnipeg) shows and are going out to Jasper in early May, with a few festivals sprinkled about our summer. Our live shows try to have a very lose and fun energy, we like to make each other laugh. Our philosophy is if we appear to be enjoying ourselves, hopefully that will translate to the audience.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Only one! Jeepers! That’s like asking a mother who her favorite child is (even though she can easily determine who her favorite child ISN’T) Gun to my head I would have to say, South Side of the Sun (from our 4th album) up to that point it was our most adventurous song in terms of vocal harmony and inter-woven melodies.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Current favorite Canadian Bands. Well I will always make a point to see Five Alarm Funk (Vancouver) when they come to town. Pure lunacy in the best possible way. And we are blessed to be living in Winnipeg where The JD Edwards Band, Sweet Alibi, The Middle Coast, Micah Erenberg Band, The Bright Righteous and Roger Roger reside, there are plenty plenty more within Winnipeg I could list.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
