Two time JUNO nominated artist, Alysha Brilla has taken some time out of her schedule to chat with us for a segment of Five Questions With. You don’t want to miss out on finding out lots more about this talented Tanzanian-Canadian musician, and now’s your chance!
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Alysha Brilla and I am a singer-songwriter-producer and activist. I make music.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style
My three favourite artists are Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse and Selena Perez. If you combined those three, I think you hear my style of writing and musicality. I love pop, reggae, jazz and conscious music with a good rhythm.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain.
My live shows are engaging, they are soulful and they are fun. I tell stories and get the audience involved.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Right now…”Bigger Than That”. It is a song I hope will motivate those feeling the oppression of power dynamics in the world right now. I wrote it about my experiences with bullying in school and the outside world. The intersection of my privileges (as a light-skinned middle-class Canadian) and the things that are stacked against me (being a woman in a male-dominated industry, coming from a Muslim background) make me feel this song the most at the moment.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Lights, Janice Jo Lee, D’bi Young and the 333. So many! I love Canadian music.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
