Year In Review – Favourite Collaboration of 2016 nominees

2016 is one for the record books but not before we reflect on the amazing accomplishments of some of our Canadian artists who happened to be nominated this year and our Canadian Beats awards. Our five picks for Favourite Collaborations of 2016 were not easy choices, and the ever so talented, Classified has two songs up in this category, along with some other major Canadian acts.

Classified ft. David Myles – Work Away

One of Canada’s well-loved hip-hop artist, Classified has had a busy year behind him. In January, he released his newest album, “Greatful”, and almost immediately set off on a tour across Canada to promote it. As 2016 comes to a close, he has one more show to play on New Years Eve in Whitehorse. According to his Facebook page, he is working to put together a tour that will hit all of the Army bases across the country. Let’s see if it all works out for him in 2017!

Brett Kissel ft. Carolyn Dawn Johnson – I Didn’t Fall In Love With Your Hair

Brett Kissel has over the last few years gone from being just a young man from Northern Alberta to being a household name across Canada. In 2016 alone he is celebrated so many accomplishments. Scoring this year’s Male Artist of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Association awards. A documentary showcasing Brett’s journey to the Grand Ole Opry stage was showcased at the Toronto independent film festival, Calgary and Edmonton Film Festival. Brett was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame this year. Probably his biggest accomplishment of the year was becoming a father. Brett and his wife Cecilia celebrated the birth of their first child “Mila Elizabeth Kissel” at the beginning of 2016. Brett has had the chance to play across Canada twice over and was also able to play a couple of shows in the United States. Overall I believe it’s been a great year for Mr. Brett Kissel.

Shawn Mendes ft. Camilla Cabella – I Know What You Did Last Summer

Shawn Mendes has had quite the exciting year in 2016, from single and album drops to world tours, he is definitely a busy young artist. Shawn went on a 4 leg, 44 date world tour to promote his album Handwritten. The tour started in New York City and went to places like Berlin, London, and Canada, stopping at Sydney Australia.  Shawn released his second full length album in September 2016 entitled Illuminate. Mendes has been crushing the charts during 2016 with his singles “Treat You Better”, which reached the top 10 of the Billboards Hot 100, Mercy and Three Empty Words. The young singer/songwriter is just getting warmed up and has another world tour planned for 20117. Can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store of Shawn Mendes and his fans.

Neon Dreams ft. Kardinall Offishall – Marching Bands

This year I have watched Neon Dreams become even bigger and better, putting out those dope tracks they are known for. Here are their accomplishments for the year 2016. My top favourite song of theirs this year is Marching Bands(feat Kardinal Offishall) which had 2 million streams on Spotify and made the Billboard Top 40 Charting. They were also on Rogers Radio-One To Watch in September. They Released their  2016 EP, To YouAnd of course they were also Juno Masterclass 2016 Winners, CBC Music-top 25 musicians under 25 in the year 2016. Neon Dreams also had 40-2016 tv placements including Keeping up with the Kardashians, The Real World and Silicon Valley. ECMA NominatedDance Recording Of The Year. They also banged out over 15 shows and were played on many radio stations! I will enjoy keeping my eye on this band and can’t wait for more music from Neon Dreams to hit the shelves or computers in 2017.
