Artist: Coleman Hell with guest Ria Mae
Venue: MacEwan Hall, Calgary
Date: November 12, 2016
It might be fall in Calgary but on November 12th, concert goers were treated to a wonderful taste of summer with a trip to Coleman Hell‘s Summerland. The venue was littered with flowers and painted moons from Coleman’s fans, dubbed the “Flower Children”. Coleman is fresh off the release of his highly anticipated debut full length, Summerland. The album is very much a concept album depicting self discovery in, you guessed it, Summerland.
The Summerland tour has brought along fellow Canadian Ria Mae as an opener. Ria is behind the massive hit “Clothes Off” that you probably heard on almost every radio station this year. Ria’s voice stole the show immediately and she delivered a flawless performance. Ria also spent a good chunk of the night at the merch table meeting as many fans as possible and posing for an incredible amount of selfies.
Coleman Hell hit the stage just after 10pm and the real life trip to Summerland commenced. Coleman was dressed to kill wearing a spectacular outfit decked out in feathers, fur, the coolest glasses ever, crazy hair and of course the signature moon painted on his forehead. Kicking off with the title track off the album his Flower Children were ready and extremely excited. Mixed in with the tracks from the story of Summerland was the perfect blend of the earlier favourites like “Sitcom” and “Thumbalina”. Coleman Hell is a stage presence like I’ve never seen before, combining costume and character with his killer talent and tracks. His energy is incredible! There’s no way you can’t have fun and enjoy every minute of a Coleman Hell show. Coleman also stayed after the show to meet every last Flower Child lined up at the merch table, graciously taking pictures and thanking them for coming, leaving some fans in full on tears.
If you haven’t seen this man live you aren’t experiencing the true creativity and showmanship of this generation. This is what it means to be a true artist. The Summerland tour has just begun and is moving east across Canada, so check your local listings and follow him to Summerland.

I have always had a passion for writing and music so working for Canadian Beats is right up my alley. I love every genre of music as long as it catches my attention, it’s on my playlist, from rap to country. When I’m not working or writing I love to spend time outside with my son playing games or going for walks.
