Mississauga ON based band, HD Stardom is made up of Mitchelle Syrnyk (Drums), Mariana Hutton (Keys), James Stajov (Bass) and Ethan Pounds (Guitar/ Vocals). I recently had a chance to ask the band a series of questions about their background, as well as what’s to come.
First off, care to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Hey, I’m Ethan, I play in HD STARDOM. We’re a psych rock band from outside of Toronto. The band consists of James Stajov on bass, Mitch Syrnyk on drums and Mariana Hutten on keys. We a dark, aggro brand of psych rock.
How did you meet and form HD Stardom?
It was basically a solo project I had for a couple of years and then I was like “maaaaan this would be cool to play live” and so I got Mitch, Mari and James involved. Now we play those songs and we’re collectively writing new ones.
You just released your EP, what can you tell us about the writing process?
Our newest EP (called Vets of the Oil Rigs) was written while I was living in Toronto over 2015. It was a pretty stressful year. Not a lot of money or sleep going on and I was experiencing a lot of anxiety. That angst finds it’s way into the music for sure. It’s a weird album. We recorded it in early 2016.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
You’re always going to pull from what you listen to which for me is stuff like Nick Cave, Death Grips, Red Snapper, Omar Rodriguez etc but also this record was inspired by personal turmoil and the youth culture of today. Use of technology and escapism primarily.
How has the response been so far?
Wicked sweet. My mom loves it.
If you had to choose one song to show a brand new listener, which would you choose? Why?
We’ve got a tune called Cannula I’d probably throw at people but whatever one they want to listen to is fine.
When can fans expect some tour dates from you?
We’re going to be travelling to Montreal in the next month or two but we’ll be playing in Toronto and surrounding area for the next bit. We’re playing Oct. 27 at Junction City Music In Toronto.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and a bunch of local bands I’m friends with. Hammerhands and Huge Cosmic are good buds.
Here at Canadian Beats, we like to include a portion of questions that may help your fans learn something new about you, so here goes:
What was the first album you ever purchased?
Hahaha probably like a green day greatest hits or something but I do have memories of being at the record store looking for Master of Puppets as a young metalhead so maybe that.
What was the last show you attended as a fan?
I saw Death Grips last Friday in NYC. It banged.
What is your favourite outdoor activity in the autumn months?
Drinking tea in a park. That counts right?
If you could only have one gadget in your everyday life, which would you choose?
Phone seems like an obvious answer but getting down to it….. probably go go gadget arms.
What is your current go-to song?
“Jesus Alone” – Nick Cave
Last but not least, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Thanks for reading if you’ve gotten this far, you lovely soul. Hopefully the music hasn’t alienated you too severely.
I’m Jenna, the founder, and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be.
