Interview – Desiree Dawson

Fresh on the heels of winning the CBC Searchlight 2016 CompetitionDesiree Dawson, singer-songwriter from Vancouver, BC, took the time to catch Canadian Beats up with life since winning and what her plans are in the upcoming months.  Check out what this lover of yoga, kale chips and the ocean has to say!

Congratulations on winning the CBC Searchlight 2016 Competition.  Now that the contest is over, you mentioned in a previous interview with Canadian Beats that you are going to focus on writing songs and touring.  Do you have any official tour or studio plans coming up that you can share with us?

Thanks so much!  No Tour plan just yet.  Hopefully soon! Once I get my EP completed! Studio time is still up in the air. I am just getting everything organized now.  Its quite a lot to handle!

For someone who has never heard your music before, how would you describe it?

Hmmm… such a tough question. You just need to just hear it and make your own description haha! I’m a storyteller.  I’m a singer- songwriter inspired and fueled by emotions so there is always soul in my music. It takes you on some sort of internal journey.. At least that is what others have said to me, haha!

What do you do for fun when you are not working on music?

I love to regroup and ground myself by spending time in nature.  My favourite thing in the world is to sit by the ocean on a cozy blanket watching the sunset with my lovely friends and family. Or on the opposite spectrum, I lock myself in my house with kale chips and dance around to music.  Truthfully though, I am always working on music.  All my interactions with others and myself fuel my songs.  I’m constantly jotting down song ideas in my journal after a passionate convo with a friend or recording clips or full songs on my phone throughout the day when a tune pops in my mind!  I love Yoga, so you can usually find me at home on my mat or around at a local yoga studio solo or with friends!

What are your thoughts on the importance of social media in the current Canadian music industry?

I haven’t quite decided how I feel about it. My views on social media in the current music industry shifts everyday.  I think it has ups and downs.  Its amazing how quickly we can all be connected and how quickly music is shared, but of course those things have their downfalls as well.

Which Canadian artists would you like to collaborate with in the future?

There are wayyyy too many  artists to name that I would be super honoured to work with. It will take me too long to say them all HAHA.  First off..Andi, Dylan Menzie, Teo Milea are high on my priority list to collaborate with! I love them so much. I need to make music with Ruth B.. like now haha! I would be so happy to work with Shad, Feist, Bahamas, Michael Bublé, Drake, Coeur de pirate, K-os, Alessia Cara, The Weeknd. K I’m gonna stop now!!

What is the last concert you attended as a fan?

Bahamas, in Vancouver! I was so freaking inspired and moved and overjoyed. It was truly an amazing show!  Actually I was a definite fan at the CBC Music Festival this year, I fell in LOVE with the band Emilie & Ogden, Hey Rosetta and the ever so inspiring John River.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Playing music and teaching yoga all around the world.. all the time 🙂

Is there a particular song that never fails to move you emotionally?

River- Joni Mitchell
Samson- Regina Spektor

Right now my sisters and I are obsessed with the song Higher, off Rihanna’s Album, Anti. Its so powerful and raw! We’ve been playing it on repeat for days and singing (screaming) along to it haha! I even started playing it on the uke.

Any hidden talents?

Mmmm.. I don’t know haha.  I can make really strange voices. Like a cartoon character.  I only ever do it when i’m exhausted and delirious or if i’m around my sisters, they really don’t like it HAHA.  I always had a dream of doing voice over work for cartoons!

If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be?
This question is tough… maybe something like,  ‘A day in the life of an indecisive heart

If you had to give up music, what would you replace it with?

Gone from my life forever? Why would I ever have to give it up? I cant answer this HAHA. If I couldn’t perform anymore I would still have no choice but to write poetry and sing all the time. Its part of who I am. BUT I would continue on with my other passion which is teaching yoga.
