Orange Crush Sunday is a new monthly afternoon live music series hosted by Jay Brody of Sirius XM’s Todd Shapiro Show. The music discovery series was launched this past Sunday as a way to showcase new original Canadian music. This Easter Sunday’s performance featured two very talented guitarist/performers: LeRiche and Nefe.
LeRiche is a 23-year-old performing artist from Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland. His latest single “Rain” speaks to his personal experiences in his native province. Opening with this new single, Leriche played seven of his original tunes. LeRiche shared his songs with the audience in such a personal and special way. The Rivoli provides the perfect warm setting that was very conducive for LeRiche to share the meanings behind his songs, adding a level of intimacy to the performance. My favourite song probably had to be “If”, which he admitted he wasn’t supposed to play but couldn’t help himself, as it is the last one he wrote and his new favourite to play.
Nefe is a Toronto artist who recently won a talent contest hosted by Sirius XM against 1,300 others. It is no surprise that she was the winner against so many others, as her presence and voice commanded and sent chills across the room. The mere power of her voice was incredible, and paired with her guitar the performance was mesmerizing. It is also not surprising that she is compared to Tracy Chapman: both in terms of the force behind her voice and the intimacy of her songwriting. Nefe also performed one of the best Fleetwood Mac covers I have heard, with her take on the classic “Dreams”.
Orange Crush Sunday was a great way to spend Easter Sunday. It was refreshing and exciting to spend the afternoon listening to two young, immensely talented musicians. Be sure to keep a look out for LeRiche and Nefe, as they are sure to be ones to watch for on the Canadian music scene.
My name is Katt and I am a born and raised Torontonian who loves everything about music. I am a rock n’ roll fanatic, with a particular passion for psychedelic and anything fem-powered. I am currently finishing up my postgraduate certificate in public relations at Humber College and hope to continue to work in the music industry- helping budding musicians make their dreams come true. I love a cold beer on a hot patio, all-dressed chips and cats. I also love road trips and secretly wish I were a trucker.
