Review – Carissa Vales

By: Dutch Bickell

Album: Burning Your Love
Release Date: 14 August 2015
Genre: Dance, Pop This talented and multi linguistic young Canadian has the ability to blend and combine so many unique sounds and flavors into each carefully crafted song. Vales took her song writing skills to each song on the album. Writing solo or co-writing each song as an original tune, specifically crafted to compliment Vales’ vocal talents.

Vales hails from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Fluent in French, Spanish, and English her song writing skills have no bounds or borders. With influences ranging from the international stylings of Selena to Cyndi Lauper, Vales creates her own sound combined with her ability to cultivate and create original material. An album that could rival the music of Kesha, Katy Perry, and Selena Gomez, Vales pumps out one “hot” track after another on Burning Your Love. The eleven track album includes eight originals, a French version of “Once Again,” and a French version and a Spanish version of “City Lights.”

The album opens with the title track “Burning Your Love,” an up-tempo, dance track. With strong beats and catchy lyrics, it hooks you into listening to the entire album. Up next is the equally hot track “City Lights,” which is definitely a jam you want to hear cranked at the club. “Golden Ones” keeps up the consistency and pace with some infused sound effects and vocal techniques. The party keeps going with “Wild Side.” “Wild Side” is the second of Vales solo writes on the album. They both showcase her lyrical creativity and ability to create catchy, upbeat tracks. “Take Me Away,” “Lipstick Rouge,” “Once Again,” and “Don’t Let Me Go” round out the rest of the album. The French version of “Once Again” (“Reviens-Moi”), and the French and Spanish versions of “City Lights” are all equally impressive in their own formats. I don’t know why the music always seems more exciting in another language.

Only 24 years of age, writing, producing, and performing come naturally to this young artist. Creating music seems to come naturally. With handfuls of musical influences, Vales combines them on Burning Your Love. Quick lyrics, catchy beats, Latin, and pop sounds round the album into one big non-stop dance party.
