Countdown to BeatboxCan – Q&A with Tim Feng

By: Jenna Melanson

We are now down to our final 2 features counting down to BeatBoxCan, which is also known as the Canadian Beatboxing Championships taking place on November 6. Up until now we have featured  Soundrax , JaegerHybrid and Sparx. Today, it’s time to introduce Vancouver BC based, Tim Feng. Now’s your chance to see what he has to say!

When did you first start beatboxing?

I first started back in 2011, I saw my friend perform at my high school’s talent show and thought “I have to learn this.” So I started practicing and watching videos non-stop to this day. And here I am now!

What is it like to be a part of the 6th Annual Canadian Beatbox Championships?

It means the world to me; not only the battles and the entertainment, but the feeling of being an integral part of this small but growing community brings me incredible joy and passion in what I do.

What sort of preparation does a beatbox performance entail?

Beatboxing is an instrument, and like an instrument, repetition is key. On stage when the nerves and pressure from the crowd, judges, and the other participants are on full display, what gets you through the performance and helps you ‘kill it’ is the trust and confidence in your routine and material, and that comes from repetition.

You will be joined by the top 16 beatboxers from all across Canada, is there anyone you are most excited to see perform?

I am very excited to see all of the new participants who are entering their first Canadian Beatbox Champs. In particular my boy Mat Teoh (MTO) also from Vancouver. It’s exciting to see people from my city representing!

What advice would you give someone just started out with Beatboxing?

GRASP THE FUNDAMENTALS. That means make sure you understand and practice the basics inside and out, rather than trying to jump straight into the most difficult sounds or patterns. You’ll find that you will discover new flows, new ideas, and also effectively translate your own original ideas into a structured, great-sounding piece of beatboxing.

Last but not least, is there anything you’d like to say to the readers?

VANCITY! The west is on the rise!
