All week we have been featuring an artist that is nominated at the upcoming CMAO Awards in Toronto, which takes place on Monday, May 25. We previously did Michelle Wright, Runaway Angel,Tebey, and Beverley Mahood, and Jason Blaine.
Now with only 2 days left until the awards, we have another great interview for you, this time with Toronto based Country duo, The Lovelocks. The duo is made up of Ali Raney & Zoe Neuman, and they have scored two nominations, one for Roots Artist or Group of the Year and the other is for Album of the Year. Keep reading to find out more about these rising country stars.
As a country musician, being nominated at the CMAO awards is such a huge accomplishment, how did you feel when you found out you were nominated?
We were blown away! As artists, we spend so much time ‘in the weeds’, writing and working on our craft. So, we really treasure the moments (such as when we received these nominations!) that pull us back into the ‘big picture’, initiating us to pause and reflect, and affirm the path we are on together. We are proud Ontario girls and are even prouder to be nominated alongside of artists we admire so much.
There’s a CMAO Conference Showcase on Sunday, May 24th called “The ‘New Faces, Going Places’ Showcase”, which is to help new Ontario talent get noticed, can you suggest an up & coming country star that you think we should all check out?
We love what Travis Wood is doing! He received a slot in the Emerging Artist Showcase at 2015 Boots ‘n Hearts, and no one deserves it more. Not only is he a killer performer, he is a fantastic writer. In fact, we wrote one of our favorite songs on our upcoming album with him.
Another exciting conference panel taking place is “The Write Stuff – A Songwriters Super Session”, can you give us the scoop on your songwriting sessions? What is your songwriting process like?
It’s fun! Usually Ali and I will have an idea and start fleshing it out between the two of us, and then we will often invite another co-writer into the fold to refine and finish it. We love ‘co-writes’ as it helps us to see different angles and bring a different flavour to our songwriting.
If you were asked to give a rising Country artist some advice, what would that advice be?
You do you. No one can do it better.
One thing that is a major marketing innovation these days is social media, making it possible for artists to connect with their fans by a simple touch of the keyboard. Do you feel this is a vital tool that all artists should partake in?
Absolutely. The power of social media has helped us connect with our audience in a way that we couldn’t otherwise. We invite people to join us on our journey, and we love sharing who we are with the world. Our efforts on social media have been the cornerstone for us being able to crowdfund over $65K, which has funded our 2 EPs!
There are many exciting performances taking place this year at the CMAO Awards Show, which are you most looking forward to? Are you excited about performing? (Current line-up includes: Autumn Hill, Beverley Mahood, Deric Ruttan Jason Blaine Jason McCoy, Leah Daniels, Lindsay Broughton, Russell DeCarle, Tebey, The Western Swing Authority and Tim Hicks)
It’s too hard to pick! We are excited to see all of our fellow Ontario musician friends do what they do best.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
We love you! We can’t wait to share our new single “Born to Love” with you (releasing to CMT May 25th & iTunes June 2nd). We hope you dig it!!
