Big Lonely is a indie rock band from Burlington, Ontario. The group is formed of Jake Heise on Guitar/Vocals, Cole Mortillaro on Drums, T. J. Bowman on Bass, and Ciaran Downes on Guitar/Vocals. They released their first full-length release entitled “Close Your Eyes, Keep Talking” on December 5, 2014. I had a chance to chat with Jake Heise about the band, their music and more, so continue reading to find out more.
How was the release party for Close Your Eyes, Keep Talking?
It went better than any of us could have imagined. We had a ton of people come out and support the show and all of the bands that played were amazing. It was really wild; people were crowd surfing and hanging off poles and stuff. Ciaran did a stage dive while playing guitar at the end of our set and I think it was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
What have been fan receptions to the album so far?
It seems to be going over really well; we’ve received lots of positive feedback so far so that has been really encouraging.
Whom, or what, have been the inspirations when writing the tracks?
When I was really young I remember my dad showing me music that his band made and I thought it was really cool. I think I just want my future children to think I’m cool when I show them our music.
Who are your main influences?
It was the local music scene in Burlington while I was growing up that sort of sparked my interest in starting a band, but stylistically my main influences come from Brand New, The Strokes, and Modest Mouse.
How did the idea of an extreme table hockey come to be?
Cole and I live together in London, Ontario currently, and I brought up an awesome tabletop hockey table at the beginning of the year. I wasn’t sure how much use it was going to get but it quickly turned into the source of a heated rivalry between the two of us. I think at one point in the video we both forgot that the camera was even there, we were just focusing on the game.
What is next in store for Big Lonely?
At this point, we’re going to focus on doing more music videos, and playing as many shows as possible. We really want this album to reach as many people as it possibly can, so we’ll be doing everything we can do to make that happen.
In typical Canadian Beats fashion, here are some ‘fun’ questions to allow fans to get to know you a bit more!

Hi Everyone! My name is Remington Fioraso. I am a graduate of the University of the Fraser Valley’s Bachelor of Arts program in Sociology, Anthropology, and Media and Communication Studies. Within my program, I focused on social media, learning about contemporary and classical sociological theory (Including Marx, Foucault, Bourdieu, and Durkheim), and communicating effectively in various modes and for different audiences (including oral communication, business communication, academic writing, entertainment media, and presentations utilizing visual media). Within my program, the question arose for many courses, “What is the relevance in the real world?” Stepping (temporarily) away from being in university, I gained an interest in Latin American development, social movements, and business. Sooner than later, I will be applying for post-grad programs to dive further into LA development and social movements to gain a theory-background in addition to a personal perspective onto the topics. In my free time, I love to travel, consume media, eat, listen to music, and write. Listening to music and writing led to my interest in working with Canadian Beats! I have been a part of the team since April 2014. A few of my personal highlights of interviews include ones with some of my favourite artists – Sumo Cyco, Madeline Merlo, and High Valley.
