If you’re into the EDM scene, there is no doubt that you’ve heard of DJ Dezza, you can continually catch his music in the playlists of many top heavy hitters. He is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is considered by many to be one of the top emerging producers in the industry. We had the chance to ask him a few questions during a virtual interview, and here’s what was said.
When did you decide that you wanted to pursue music?
Dezza: Music always surrounded me. My whole family plays instruments and have played in successful bands. I got my first set of turntables in Jr High and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Was it an easy decision for you to go in the EDM direction? What made you choose EDM over other genres?
Dezza: Electronic music is constantly progressing. As a musician that progression is constantly challenging you to stay relevant. It constantly pressures you to re-create yourself or get left behind. A lot of other genres are generic and boring. Watching them all try to copy electronic production in certain ways is pretty hilarious and allows me to realize I always made the right choice focusing on electronic.
Do you find Halifax is a good location to be in this type of music?
Dezza: To be completely honest, it’s not the best location. I only say this because our population cant rival that of Toronto or Montreal where you have seen a lot of Candian artists flock to. We don’t have the opportunity of bringing in a lot of the big names either. Based off of flight issues or the simple fact we cant earn the ticket sales some of these artists require to perform here. However Underdog and AFTRDRK seem to be bringing a new attitude to bookings here in Halifax so far.
Your last 6 singles quickly made it into the Top 20 genre charts on the industry’s leading digital store, beatport.com, how did that feel?
Dezza: Like the first time I climbed the rope in gym class 😉
In your time in the music industry, who has been your favourite person to work with?
Dezza: I like to build with other artists. I feel I’ve been able to build with Neon Dreams. I’ve been able to show them a lot and I feel by surrounding myself with like minded energetic artists I can create better music as well. It’s all bout big CHUNES and you gotta love the FTK (For The Kids) movement.
Do you have any upcoming collaborations?
Dezza: I have a collaboration that I’m extremely proud of and honestly I have goosebumps after listening to the final master. All I can say is that the legendary Tommy Boy Entertainment label is releasing it.
You were part of the East Coast Lifestyle show earlier in the month, how was that?
Dezza: We did the first ever “AFTRDRK Collective” set. Basically working alongside my best friends and creating a set that I feel set the tone perfectly for DVBBS. The final wrap video will be released by Kyle Richards and AFTRDRK (www.thisisafterdark.com)
If you were to do a similar show with all acts that you chose, which EDM artists would you choose to be apart of it with you?
Dezza: Eric Prydz, Pryda and Cirez D LOL all three styles in one night, no change over. Either that or a collab set with Love Duo DJs (look out for that one).
Do you have any plans for any shows that you want to tell us about?
Dezza: Working on a release party with Tommy Boy in NYC. Also hoping to get to a pretty discreet venue in a small village in Europe to play for Aminov.
If you were trying to convince someone to listen to your tracks, which would be the first one that you would recommend? Why?
Dezza: My latest work. I don’t like to get caught in the past. You should always be confident and proud of your work but I think it’s important to always be pushing your latest sound the hardest.
Here at Canadian Beats, we always like to include a “fun” portion to our interviews, so here goes:
What is your all time favourite movie?
Dezza: Freddy Got Fingered
If you had the chance to be on any TV show as a guest, which show would you choose?
Dezza: Absolutely would have to be on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian musicians, who is your favourite Canadian band/ artist/ DJ?
Dezza: Adam K, Paris & Simo, Sultan & Ned Shepard and Our Lady Peace
Last but not least, do you have anything you’d like to say to your fans?
