If you’re anything like us, at Canadian Beats, you want to know more about Lee Fraser. Well, you’re in luck, keep reading to learn lots more about this talented, Canadian DJ/ Producer.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, who are some of your favourite Canadian bands/artists?
LF: There’s a lot of people doing really cool things right now.. A lot of up and coming Djs/Producers coming out of Canada but my top at the moment are Kaytranada, Paris & Simo and Bitfunk (although he’s now based out of NY but originally from Nova Scotia).
If you could put together a tour with any Canadian bands/artist including yourself, who would headline and who would the openers be?
LF: I’d do exactly what we’re doing right now.. The whole AFTRDRK Fam together – Neon Dreams, Dezza & Myself – we’ve done a lot of big things this year so far so I’m excited to see what the next 9 months bring!
What made you decide that music is what you wanted to do?
LF: I’ve been in a love affair with Electronic music since I was 13.. I got hooked on it, started DJ-ing and if you ask anyone who’s known me for some time they’ll tell you that I live and breath electronic music day and night. No matter how many times I feel like shelving it and putting it aside to focus on other aspects of my life I always come right back and wonder why I ever thought that in the first place.
At what age did you start with music?
LF: I started DJ-ing at 13 but I’ve never been taught how to play any instrument. Over the last few years doing music I’ve taught myself about music theory came up won a few DJ competitions when I was 19/20 and kept at it since.. I’ve more recently turned my focus onto producing and took a back seat to the whole DJ scene until recently.
You are part of AftrDrk Entertainment, how did that all get started?
LF: AFTRDRK started as a weekly residency for me at STFX in Antigonish. At the time I was sick of the way the music scene in Halifax was, or lack there of, so I decided to develop my own brand in a new market. We took a venue that had maybe 100 people on a good night and developed that into 400-600 in attendance weekly. Over that last four years I’ve put together a solid team and roster of artists who have monthly residencies with us to feature their own music.
As a producer, if you could produce for any artist, who would you want to produce for?
LF: My list for that is way too long haha.. but if I had to narrow it down I’d like to link up with some old school legends like ATFC and Axwell or some of the new school guys who are dominating the scene now like Hot Since 82 and Kryder.
There’s a ton of different music genres, what made you want to do EDM?
LF: It was all about the energy and positive vibes from the whole electronic genre.. There’s such a vast array of genres when it comes to Dance music and if you listen to music from 10 years ago and some from today you can really see how the music has progressed. It always amazes me how far the sounds in electronic music have come and what producers can do with music and how far they can take it.
These next questions will help your fans get to know you better, Do you have a favourite childhood memory?
LF: Every summer in Cape Breton was a blast! Sun, swimming, boozing hanging out with friends.. wouldn’t do it any differently!
If you had to listen to one album for a year, which album would you listen to?
LF: That’s easy.. Daft Punk – Discovery or Snoop Dogg – Doggystyle.
What is your favourite color?
LF: Anything V – Neck.
What song describes you best?
LF: Live Your Life – Eddie Thoeneick & Erick Morillo
Do you have any hidden talents?
LF: Leaving the burner on full blast on the stove.. or leaving pizza pockets in the oven full blast.. either or in equal measure.
And lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
