Bastard Poetry is an acoustic based punk/rock band from Saskatoon. The band is made up of a group of pals, Jesse Kane (Lead Guitar), Jimmy Hunter (Drums), Alex Shenton (Vocals & Rhythm) and later they found that Jesse’s old friend, Cole Jordan (Bass) would be a perfect fit, so that makes a full band.

All bands have a goal in their music career, and these guys have a great one, which is “Give people a beat to move their feet to, melody to wash the dust of everyday life away, and raw poetry to feel feelings to.”

The band released their debut album, Whole. on September 6, 2013. The album features 11 tracks, and of course if you’re familiar with our reviews, you know that you’re about to hear about three of those songs.

First of all, I’d like to talk about the second track on the album, “Optimism”, which starts out slow, but quickly gains a high energy sound, and lyrics which quickly snuck into my head. You can’t help but do what the song says and move your feet. With lyrics such as “Like a puppet on heart strings, become one with our rhythm” and “So let’s dance the night away, I wouldn’t have it any other way”. It’s clear that they really put all of their energy into these songs, and I can only imagine how great it would be to see/ hear live.

The next song that I have to tell you about is the seventh song, “Starsy”, which unlike the previous song, doesn’t start slow, it begins with the high energy and it continues through the whole song. It’s bands like these guys that make me love doing this blog, you can hear their love for the music in each song, and they are clearly having fun, doing what they love.

The ninth song, “Cinematic” is a bit lower energy, but the lyrics still pull you in right away. I can see why the word “Poetry” is in the bands name because every song has perfectly poetic lyrics, with lyrics such as “We went our separate ways, Enough memories for the rest of our days, Did you know I love you still.” I have to say that these guys know how to do two things perfectly, write songs and of course, perform them with the kind of energy that is infectious.

I would highly recommend anyone give this album a listen, and join in on all the fun that Bastard Poetry is having.
