Review – Summerteeth

Album: Sweet Nothing
Release Date: June 22, 2018
Genre: Pop-Punk

Summerteeth are a pop-punk band hailing from Toronto, Ontario. They released their second EP entitled Sweet Nothing on June 22, 2018.

Rooting influences from bands like Jimmy Eat World, Moose Blood, and Weezer, the 3-piece tried a classic emo-style influenced album. The opening track “Born Too Late” has a classic pop-punk feel, heavy driven lyrics with the catchy, boppy music track in the back. “Stay Warm” has a softer feel, showing the lead singers great voice mixed in great with the lyrics.

“Talk About Anything” is faster, giving it the more Jimmy Eat World-style mentioned earlier. This song sounds like something I’d love to hear live, as it encourages crowd and band sing-alongs. “Tell Me I’m Good” reminds me of the classic pop-punk I’d listen to in high school, a style that seems like bands are intimidated to try again. Summerteeth nailed it perfectly and have given me huge nostalgia vibes throughout the song.

The title track “Sweet Nothing” is what I would call a “summer jam”, ironic how the band is called Summerteeth. This is a song I could listen to on drives with my friends or just sitting around relaxing. The EP is an interesting take on the pop-punk scene and moulds in well with some of the newer pop-punk bands while keeping it similar to the titans of the genre.

Summerteeth’s second EP is excellent. Since pop-punk is my favourite genre, there are days I like to hear something new and creative but somedays I’d like the same style. Summerteeth do both perfectly. Each song shows they know how to do the classic pop-punk style but they also squeeze in their own style. I’ll be excited to see where the band goes from here and think they would do excellent at a summer festival.
