Toronto based electro-pop band, Bon Villan has released their debut self-titled EP today, and we are stoked to be hosting the premiere of this stellar five-track release. From the opening of the first single, “Outta Cash” to the end of “Love Online, I was completely hooked. The whole EP feels like one big party, full of upbeat electronic music, awesome vocals and lyrics, plus a smooth style that will most likely leave you wanting more.

When asked about the release, the band comments,

“For us, these songs are about growing up in the digital era and how that shaped our experiences of love and self-expression.”

Now, take a few moments and check out the EP below, as well as our newest segment of Five Questions With. You won’t regret it, you may just find a new favourite band!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! We’re Bon Villan. We write electro-pop songs in Toronto, Ontario. My name is Jules and I play guitar and synth in the band alongside one topnotch singer named Jared and one very tall man we call Hanes.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our music is heavily influenced by electronic artists and producers and overlaid with catchy melodies and hooks reminiscent of your favourite pop songs.  We like to explore dark moods and write songs with grit but we also write songs that are bright and upbeat. Incorporating live vocals and instruments also helps give our music a natural warmth that sets us apart from other EDM artists.

Our writing mantra is “try everything”. We do most of our songwriting on the computer which allows us to quickly test, and inevitably scrap, idea after idea before we get to something that we all collectively think is amazing. Generally, someone will bring in the beginnings of a song and we will all work together from there, though at times Jared will bring in fully fleshed out songs that Hanes and I add to over time. Overall our writing process is very collaborative and we aim to keep it that way moving forward.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Our next live show is in Montreal March 15th opening for Syzzors at Casa Del Popolo. It’s our first show in Montreal so we’re stoked!

For a band that plays with no amps or live drums, our live performance is banging. We love to let loose on stage and all the extra room gives us the opportunity to do just that.  Jared has a ton of energy on stage that audiences feed off of and we love to program deep subs and heavy kicks that shake your whole body in a live venue.  If you’ve had a long week and just gotta dance it out, Bon Villan is here for you.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Right now I’d have to say Outta Cash. It was the first single we released and really gives a great intro to the band.  The songs feature a lot of the different aspects of the sound that has come to be definitive of Bon Villan.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

We gotta send a shout out to our good friends in MONOWHALES. They’ve been just absolutely killing it lately and given all us other Toronto bands something to strive towards. We had a dope EDM Artist called SLEEPYCATT close off some events for us, we suggest you check him out. Also if you’re looking for some great shows, do yourself a favour and check out Lush Buffalo, Cardboard Crowns, or Goodbye Honolulu. Also, Syzzors, check out Syzzors!
