Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

What’s up, everyone! Our names are Matt and Joey and together we make up the pop duo ‘The Farewell Summer’.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

We just released our EP titled ‘Moments’. Nowadays, it’s so hard to be ‘present’. Each experience that we have flies by us so quickly as if it’s just another video or tweet on our social media feeds. The important things in our life soon turn into nothing but a fleeting memory. Each track off of this EP is us taking a snapshot of brief moments in life, in a desperate attempt to hold onto those memories. We co-wrote all four songs together and in that, we really wanted to paint a range of emotions; we gravitate around childlike ignorance and youthful energy in tracks like ‘Kids’. But then we write about sadness and nostalgia found in the later years of life in our song ‘Memories’.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

At the moment, we are focused on writing and recording with the plan to release a few singles this year. However, we are very excited to be booking festival shows for the summer. Our live performance is very similar to an electronic show in terms of excitement and raw energy. But we sharply contrast this with rawness and authenticity when we strip everything away and level with our audience with nothing but a guitar and our voices. With two of us on stage, it makes for a different dynamic than most bands that have just one frontman.  We are an electronic band that includes two multi-instrumentalists. This allows us to recreate a jacked up electronic sound using live drums, guitar, piano etc…We like to keep things as loud as possible!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

We’d definitely suggest the song that you are featuring: ‘Bonnie & Clyde’! To us, we’re most proud of how we could capture teenage rebellion within the lyrics. We describe the reckless abandon of our youth, sneaking out late at night, and running wild without fear or worry. This song was self-produced at home, and because of that, it is very special to us. We feel ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ has opened up the door for us musically, and we are so excited to have discovered this vibe.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

We’ve been listening to a lot of Virginia to Vegas and  Dan Tavelski lately! We briefly had the opportunity to meet a couple of the members from Valley, and we are diggin’ their sound as well!
