Show review: The Elwins, FXRRVST & Jukebox The Ghost

Who: The Elwins, FXRRVST, Jukebox The Ghost
When: December 3, 2017
Where: The Mod Club, Toronto ON

Everyone’s favourite indie rockers The Elwins hit The Mod Club in Toronto to celebrate the release of their latest album Beauty Community with a high-energy, raucous party. Joining them were the emo-folksy sounds of FXRRVST and the groovy tunes of Jukebox The Ghost.

FXRRVST opened the show with a subdued set, easing us into the night with soothing melodies and reflective songs. With bright vocals, just the right amount of guitar solos, and an introspective persona, FXRRVST filled the venue with a warm spirit on a Sunday night.

After FXRRVST eased us into the show, Jukebox The Ghost came out ready to party. With tight harmonies, never-ending energy, and falsetto that just won’t quit, the trio had the whole venue grooving to their larger-than-life sounds. Some highlights from their set included a new song titled “Boring,” a relatable hit about getting old and the realization that all your friends are having babies and “nobody’s sure why.” Towards the end of the set, the band launched into a cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which they pulled off perfectly, getting the crowd dramatically singing along.

The Elwins finally hit the stage to excited cheers and got things going with “Looks Like You’re Hiding” from Beauty Community. Playing a number of tracks from the new album, and a few singles from Play For Keeps, punchy beats and lively melodies coloured their set. From the catchy hook of fan favourite “Show Me How To Move” to the groovy new single “Hey! Ya, You,” The Elwins brought their all to the stage.

A highlight of the night was when guitarist/keyboardist Feurd and bassist Frankie Figliomeni knelt down as singer/guitarist Matthew Sweeney lay over them in some type of rockstar/cheerleader pyramid hybrid. I wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but at least there’s a photo to prove it.

Ending the night on a high note, The Elwins brought the opening bands back on stage during their encore for a heartwarming, group sing-along to “Grind You Down.”
