Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Claire Mortifee, I am a singer and songwriter. Although I am an artist, I try to make my main focus of my life, day-to-day and moment-to-moment, finding the calmness and joy within myself. This constant practice enables me to do what I truly love, which is creating and performing my original music.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style

I consider the musical genre of my album Medicines to be alternative RnB. With that being said, I have written and recorded various other styles as well. For this album, I sat down with producers Chin Injeti, Pat Lok, AstroLogical, Nick Wisdom and David Morin to co-create the various songs on the album. We worked closely together to create a body of work that was uplifting; with the producers forming the instrumentation and myself writing all the lyrics and singing the vocal melodies. This project truly has been medicine for me…I hope it can be for everyone that hears it as well.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I’ve been in the studio recording and releasing so I’m starting to make live shows the main focus. I’ll be playing at Fortune in Vancouver on Dec. 5th, and I’m currently working on finalizing some dates in Toronto for January. I usually perform with a full band, which is always a powerful and energetic performance. I am also developing my solo set routines with a drum machine and midi keyboard.  It’s been a fun process and I’m always learning.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Take a listen to Panther Paws prod. by Chin Injeti. The song speaks to the mirror of an intimate relationship, and how my experience in that relationship was both humbling and rewarding. We just released our new music video directed by the incredible force that is Rae Maxwell. I had an incredible time filming it with her in LA.  The video for Panther Paws can be seen above.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?

Currently, I’d say some of my favourite Canadian artists are: The Sorority because I love those women; Shi Wisdom because she’s an outstanding vocalist and songwriter, Majid Jordan because I’ve been listening to that on repeat for years; and Snotty Nose Rez Kids because they speak truth to power which inspires me! Bless all of you artists out there, we need you more than you know.
