Five Questions With Justine Blanchet

Recently, we had a chat with 16-year-old Montreal based singer-songwriter, Justine Blanchet. Justine has just released her debut single entitled “Sing Like No One’s Watching”, which you check out below, along with our newest segment of Five Questions With. We hope you enjoy finding out more about this up-and-coming Canadian artist as much as we did!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Justine Blanchet, I’m a 16-year-old singer-songwriter from Quebec. I’ve been singing in public since the age of 5 years old. I play piano, guitar and saxophone. I started composing my songs when I was 10.

I’m a full-time student, but every free minute I have is spent on practicing and writing songs.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I always have my songwriting book with me so where ever I go, if something inspires me, I write it down right away. I like to inspire people in my songs, but I also write about typical stuff teenagers are going through.

I generally schedule time every week for songwriting. During that time, I usually start by some chord progression on my guitar. Then I try to find a melody. I use the words I drafted in my songwriting book to craft the lyrics. Once a week, I meet with one of my co-writer to improve the song I’ve been working on.

Samuel will do the arrangements that reflect who I am. I like to have some variety in style in my songs, but they generally sound “pop country” which is pop music with themes, vocal styles, rhythm and instrumentation typical of country music.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I don’t have any upcoming scheduled shows for this fall and winter since I am focusing on writing original materials. Right now my performances are generally only two or three songs accompanied by myself. I plan to have a series of shows with my band this coming spring and summer. Information about my upcoming performances can be found on my website.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Definitely my debut single “Sing Like No One’s Watching”.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Some of my current favourite Canadian artists are Shania Twain, Lindsay Ell, George Canyon, Shawn Mendes, River Town Saints and Cold Creek Country.
