Five Questions With Steph Morin

We had a chat with Montreal based singer-songwriter, Steph Morin about his upcoming album which is set for release in 2018, as well as his single, “Last Train” which is available on iTunes, Google Play or any good digital platform.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Nice to meet you Canadian Beats readers! I’m a Canadian singer-songwriter from Montreal and I’ve been working on my upcoming album since the end of 2015. I’m happy to present my first single called Last Train, it is the title track of my new album set to be released in 2018. I hope you’ll like it and I’m looking forward to getting your feedback!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I would describe my music by saying that I’m making some rock songs with a little country twist. Music has always been a good therapy for me and I try to stay as honest as possible when I write a song. Most of the time, something you hear is associated with a really specific moment or emotion I’ve lived on a specific time in my personal life. Relevance is really important to me, I want people to relate to something they live or lived in their own life when they hear my lyrics. If I don’t think it can reach other people’s emotions, the song goes to the trash. Of course, as a musician who grew up with Bon Jovi & Bruce Springsteen, I like powerful hooks, so I try to rock the house as much as I can, especially when the chorus kicks in!

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

At the moment, me and my team are focusing on the final steps to the album release. We are putting the final touch to the mix so we can bring you the best album we can. I love to meet new people and I just can’t wait to play these songs live! Stay tuned, you might see me play in a few places in Eastern Canada / USA in the coming months and we’ll probably hit the road somewhere in 2018.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I have to say that I’m really proud of my new single called Last Train. It’s the first song I wrote after a reflecting road-trip back in the end of summer 2015 and it defines the theme and mood around the whole album. I came back to Montreal with this particular song which has a great hook, a ‘’looking forward’’ attitude and I think everyone has faced this situation, having to take this hard decision to leave someone they love once in their life.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?

There is something pure and unique about Neil Young’s sound that I really like and I used to play Rockin’ In The Free World live for many years. Heart of Gold for me is a Masterpiece.

Bryan Adams: That guy knows how to rock an arena! I was born in the 80’s, so I grew up with his hits playing on the radio. My favourite song? I just can’t decide… Maybe “On A Day Like Today” or “The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me”

The Nashville music trend has changed since a few years and I just love what we now call ‘’New Country’’ music. Shoutout to Dallas Smith & Tim Hicks, our Canadians who are doing a hell of a job in that category.

I can’t answer that question without a special mention for Ryan Kennedy, an authentic and creative singer-songwriter from Montreal. Take a listen to his brand new album called Love Is Gold, I think it’s a perfect fit for this time of year.

Last Train is available on iTunes, Google Play or any good digital platform.
