Five Questions With Yes Me Mystic

Winnipeg’s own Yes We Mystic are heading on tour this fall, including a month-long residency at Toronto’s Rivoli. You can see the dates below, and if you’re in the area you should definitely check them out! Be sure to give our newest segment of Five Questions With a read and find out more about this talented art rock band.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Our band is called Yes We Mystic, we’re from Winnipeg Manitoba. We have been a band for over 6 years now, and put out our debut album Forgiver last year and have been able to tour around the world because of it, which we’re so lucky for.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our music is grand and emotional and intimate and obtuse and pleasing and frustrating, depending on the moment. We’ve been denied shows at venues both because we were “too weird” and “too straightforward” on different occasions, which kinda sums it up—we’re a hard one to pin down I guess. Making music is a thousand little choices and we try to have none of the choices we make dictated by genre, and all of them dictated by feeling.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We have a whole lot of upcoming shows. We are playing every remaining Tuesday this month at the Rivoli in Toronto, and have shows in Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, New York, and many others. I’d describe our performance as more intense than you’d expect—we are very connected to these songs and the emotion in the room makes the big parts feel bigger, so people often are surprised by the explosive kinda broody vibe that we give off.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I’d point people to our song No Harm, which captures an off-kilter energy which has come up again and again in new songs we’ve been writing. It’s fun, but it’s complicated and not at all straightforward, and the fun is offset by the slightly dark, slightly nostalgic lyrics.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I’ve had access to the new Holy Hum record out of Vancouver that hasn’t come out yet. It’s haunting, it’s beautiful, it’s something that I really recommend people check out when it is released. Likewise, our friend Mark Mills has a record that’s coming out soon that is really fun but also very powerful. It came from a really hard time and the pain and the perseverance really shine through.
