BreakOut West 2017 takes place in Edmonton, AB between September 13 – 17. The event encompasses the Western Canadian Music Awards, Industry Awards, Hall of Fame Induction, Industry Conference, Kick-off Concert and a city-wide Music Festival. It’s the place to be if you’re able! The Festival itself features over 60 of the best in Western Canadian bands and artists, and we are happy to chat with a few of them leading up to the event! First, we spoke with Manitoba based Kayla Luky, Vancouver’s The Matinée, Saskatchewan’s The Wolfe, Vernon BC’s //AMISTAD//, Vancouver’s alt-pop band, The Tourist Company, Winnipeg’s VIKINGS and finally, Edmonton’s Nuela Charles. Today we are chatting with Nick Knock from rock and roll band, Moon Tan. Enjoy!
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey, there Canadian Beats readers! My name is Nick Knock and I play in the intergalactic space freak rock and roll band known as Moon Tan.
You are taking part in this year’s BreakOut West, what does it feel like to be a part of this event?
Moon Tan is super excited to be taking part in BreakOut West. Any opportunity to be able to play our rock and roll alongside some of the finest bands in Western Canada is a total treat!
What other bands/ artists are you looking forward to checking out at BreakOut West?
I’m excited to check out The Ballantynes, they kind of have a Motown-esque vibe to them and I love that music! Of course, we always want to go and check out some of our local friends like Bright Righteous, Attica Riots, Mobina Galore, Ghost Twin, Hearing Trees, and The Lytics as some of the coolest/ vibrant music is coming out of the ‘Peg right now.
I hear there is a Closing BBQ on September 17, so of course, I have to ask, what’s your go to food to BBQ?
If we’re talking real BBQ I would have to say either beef brisket or ribs, it’s so good yet so bad at the same time.
Do you have any other upcoming shows that you’d like to tell us about?
Moon Tan will be heading to the UK in March to take part in the Indie Week UK festival which we are really excited about. It will be our first time playing shows across the pond as a band and we’re looking forward to playing in front of a brand new audience and make new friends/ Fans!
If someone has yet to see you perform live, how would you describe your live show?
We are three freaks that decided to pick up instruments after listened to a steady rotation of Led Zeppelin, P- Funk, and Yes and watched one too many Sci- Fi B movies.
If you were only able to recommend ONE song for a new listener, which would you choose?
Probably our latest release “The Faceless Knight”. It contains the soaring vocals, solid riffing, and tight rhythmic syncopation that us three have been come to be known for.
Here at Canadian Beats, we’re all about Canadian music, who are some of your favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Some of our favourite Canadian bands currently are Johnny 2 Fingers and the Deformities (check out there new EP “Built To Rock N’ Roll”), Crown Lands, Spaceport Union, White Lung, Streetheart, and Bodhi Jar. Also maybe Rush.
What’s up next for you?
Up next for us is to continue writing the album that will tear your faces off- right now we have enough material to definitely blow off your eyebrows but writing will continue into 2018.
