Countdown to BreakOut West – Interview with Nuela Charles

BreakOut West 2017 takes place in Edmonton, AB between September 13 – 17. The event encompasses the Western Canadian Music Awards, Industry Awards, Hall of Fame Induction, Industry Conference, Kick-off Concert and a city-wide Music Festival. It’s the place to be if you’re able! The Festival itself features over 60 of the best in Western Canadian bands and artists, and we are happy to chat with a few of them leading up to the event! First, we spoke with Manitoba based Kayla Luky, Vancouver’s The Matinée, Saskatchewan’s The Wolfe, Vernon BC’s //AMISTAD//, Vancouver’s alt-pop band, The Tourist Company, and finally Winnipeg’s VIKINGS. Today we are chatting with Edmonton’s own Nuela Charles. Enjoy!

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Nuela (new-ella) Charles. I am an alternative/soul artist based in Edmonton, Alberta.

You are taking part in this year’s BreakOut West, what does it feel like to be a part of this event?

Being a part of Breakout West is always a great time. It feels like the coming together of like-minded people, and kind of like summer camp for musicians at times.  If you take part in the sessions, you’ll definitely learn a lot, and it’s really just about connecting with others.

What other bands/ artists are you looking forward to checking out at BreakOut West?

Youngblood.

Besides the performances, is there any other event that you’re looking forward to?

I’m definitely looking forward to the Western Canadian Music Awards night. Being nominated for an award, it’ll definitely be a great time.

I hear there is a Closing BBQ on September 17, so of course, I have to ask, what’s your go to food to BBQ?

You can’t go wrong with hot dogs and hamburgers.

Do you have any other upcoming shows that you’d like to tell us about?

I’ll be performing at UP+Downtown Festival on October 7th at the outdoor stage with Wintersleep, Weaves, and more.

If someone has yet to see you perform live, how would you describe your live show?

Bond. James Bond. Really that’s it. I am the soundtrack.

If you were only able to recommend ONE song for a new listener, which would you choose?

Crumbling Down

Here at Canadian Beats, we’re all about Canadian music, who are some of your favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Alanis Morissette.

What’s up next for you?

Right after BOW, I’ll be heading off for two weeks to London, UK and Los Angeles, CA for some writing sessions, which I’m really excited about.  It’s cool because these writers have written some of my favourite songs, so it’ll be amazing working together for my own stuff.
