Five Questions With Julien Kelland

Uxbridge, ON based alternative pop singer, Julien Kelland has recently released a new single, “Deep Down”, and she has a few upcoming show dates to tell us about as well. We’re pleased to have a bit of time with her in this segment of Five Questions With! Enjoy!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi there! My name is Julien Kelland, and I am a singer/songwriter from Uxbridge, Ontario, which is just north of Toronto! I’ve been singing since I was 6 years old, from small-town choir performances, to opening for CCMA winning country artists. I’ve just released a brand new single in anticipation for my new EP, coming out in June!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I have been writing music since I was 9 years old, so naturally my writing style has changed and grown over the years. When people ask me, “What kind of music do you sing”, my answer is usually something like, “Well, it’s definitely singer-songwriter/alternative, but there’s a strong pop influence which makes my music “mainstream”. I draw inspiration from all different directions, including classic rock all the way to hip-hop.” If I had to compare myself to one popular artist right now, I’d most likely compare my musical style to that of Banks, but with more of a hip-hop influence. One thing I have always enjoyed is co-writing. All of the songs on my upcoming EP have been co-written by some amazing and extremely talented artists that I have been so lucky to work with. The reason I enjoy co-writing so much is because when you’re writing with other people, you’re able to get different perspectives that you may never have been able to channel without the knowledge or experience of someone else. You’re able to create something even greater than your own self and ideas. Although all of the songs on my upcoming EP have stemmed from myself &/or personal experience, I feel as though, with the ideas of people other than myself, my songs are more relatable for my audience.

Do you have any upcoming show? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I do have a few upcoming shows! I have sort or changed my style a little over this past year, so I haven’t booked as many shows as I usually do because I wanted to wait for my new music to be out into the world, and to book shows to fit my current style more. That being said, I have a few local shows booked for this summer.

June 10th- Wixan’s Bridge Block Party: Wixan’s Bridge, 65 Brock St W, Uxbridge (time tbd)
July 8th– Hits Fest 2017: 180 Main Street South, Uxbridge (time tbd)
July 22nd– Julien Kelland’s EP Release Party, 16 Main St S, Uxbridge (time tbd- evening performance)

My live show is an amazing experience, and something I have enjoyed to see grow over the last 6 years. I perform full band, which has been backed-up by a collection of some of the most incredible musicians I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I like to have fun on stage, and I want my audience to have as much fun as possible. I play a collection of covers from current chart-topping hits, to the classics that parents and their kids know and love. I love the variety of upbeat songs mixed with piano/guitar ballads that I perform in my live show. It keeps my audience intrigued, and allows for something that everyone will enjoy!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Definitely my brand new single, Deep Down. I released this single on Monday, May 22nd, 2017, and I’m thrilled to finally have a display of my new music and the artist that I really want to be out there! Attached is the link to my new music video! You can download and stream Deep Down everywhere music is heard!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artist?

Of course, I would have to say Drake and The Weeknd are two Canadian artists that I love that are definitely doing us proud, and for good reason! Some other Canadian artists that I absolutely love are: Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Dallas Green, and Sarah McLachlan, just to name a few. I could go on forever! There is so much undeniable talent in Canada.

I’d like to thank you so much for this opportunity! It was an absolute pleasure doing this interview with you! Down below I have attached all of my social media links! Stay tuned for more new music coming soon!
