Five Questions With High Love

Vancouver four-piece, High Love (formerly REND) have recently released their new single, “No Longer Yours” and are currently on tour throughout Western Canada. We’re happy they took some time out of the touring schedule to chat with us for this segment of Five Questions With! Enjoy!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We are a four piece alternative band based in Vancouver, BC called High Love. We like rock and roll, dogs, cats… pretty much any animal, adventures, waterfalls, hangs with each other and our friends, video games and food!

Carol-Lynne Quinn: Vocals/Synths
Jeff Quinn: Bass/Synths
Jordan Dempster: Drums
Steve Roe: Guitar

We all do part time work when we are not on tour:

One of us is an sound designer for video games. One of us is a massage therapist. One of us builds cabinets and the other coaches vocals.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style

Our main goal for this next record is contrast. We are passionate about creating music that plays with dynamic sonic soundscapes. Ambience to Rock and Roll. Organic to Electronic moments.

We explored  a bunch of different writing processes while creating our upcoming record.  Some of our songs start out with me (CL) writing on the key, lyrics, melody, chords etc. Other songs Jeff and I started out by creating a soundscape or vibe on Pro Tools and then added the rock band elements after the foundation was set. A few of our tracks we wrote the bass and vocal first. We wrote one song in the studio at 2 am – I’ve always been intrigued and inspired by Tori Amos and how she would improv one of her songs on each record. We ended up being inspired one night and Steve and I wrote a song and recorded it on the spot. It’s now one of our faves.  It’s been fun creating in different ways and allowing ourselves to step outside the lines. Our main mantra was to not care what anyone else thinks and simply just create what was inside of us. Our producer Howard Redekopp and the team at Prophets of Music/OCL Studios in Calgary were all huge key element for giving us the space and permission to be who we are and create whatever we wanted with no limiting lines.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We do! We are teaming up with our awesome friends in the Victoria based band Fortune Killers on a Western Canadian tour right away in support of our single No Longer Yours and then we are planning a cross Country tour in the fall to support our record release!

Our live show goes hand in hand with our sonic vision of dynamic contrast. You will experience up beat rock and roll, cinematic builds and stripped down acoustic moments. We want our audience to have an experience and feel something with us. There is nothing better than feeling and experiencing moments together. We want our audience to come out and be able to let us take them on a journey that takes them away from the stresses or busyness of their lives. And.. it’s also fun.. there are serious moments but also moments of rock and roll, head banging, jumping on the drums and kazoo solos… which you have to see to understand!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Well since we are a band, we are going to take the liberty of answering this each individually haha!

Jeff (bass) :  Amy.. this is unreleased but the bass line is super badass.. can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

CL (vocals/synth) :  No Longer Yours.. this is one of my favourites and I like that it alludes to both dark pop and rock and roll. I am also incredible connected to these lyrics.

Jordan (drums) : Collide.. this song is also unreleased but we are really digging it right now and will be playing it on our upcoming tour.

Steve (guitar) : Collide!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Ah there are so many amazing Canadian musicians out there… we’ve all been really inspired and into Mother Mother for quite a long time. We love their creativity and they are killer live; we were on a festival line up with them a few years back and freaked out a little! We also love Half Moon Run, those guys are super talented. There are also so many killer local musicians back in our home town of Edmonton and in Vancouver. I started naming them and the list was so extensive that I would just say please go check out your local music scene! Guaranteed there are some incredible, innovative and inspiring musicians who play in your city… you just have to dig a little.
