Five Questions With Mallory Johnson

We first met Mallory Johnson, in London, Ontario last year, at Diamonds In The Rough; the popular multi-session event, put on by Sirroma Entertainment, showcasing many of Canada’s up-and-coming artists, during CCMA Week. On May 12, 2017, Johnson released her latest single, “Good Mistake To Make”. This is one you need to listen to! I dare you to sit still while listening! It’s a little bit classic country with a modern edge and a whole lot of attitude.

Get to know more about her here in our Five Questions with Mallory Johnson.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi! I’m Mallory Johnson, a Canadian country artist and singer/songwriter from Newfoundland & Labrador, based in Toronto!

Pasta is my weakness, especially when it’s paired with wine. I have a big, lovable, clumsy Newfoundland Dog at home named Mia, and I never sing the melody when belting radio tunes in my car.. it’s always a random harmony line.

Please tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I’m definitely a country music fan first and foremost and I grew up performing Celtic/Folk music as well, so my material very much revolves around the storytelling. My music hints more towards a 90’s vibe and you can definitely hear influences from that era in my songs. I’m also a huge fan of Kacey Musgraves and her style of writing, so sometimes you can hear a little of her influence in my work as well. I love to make people smile, so I definitely have some tongue-in-cheek material in my set.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I’m actually going to be spending a lot of time this Summer touring radio stations in the US promoting my new single “Good Mistake to Make”! I love being out on the road meeting and chatting with the people who believe in my music. I think those relationships are so important, and I’ll get up early any day to get the chance to chat and catch up. Outside of that, I have a few shows lined up but can’t announce the details yet. I’m going to be flying back to St. John’s, Newfoundland for a big Canada Day Celebration, but that’s all I can give away at the moment.

I definitely like to leave the stage believing that my audience knows me. A great show sends an audience on an emotional roller coaster and I think that’s exactly what my set does (at least I hope so! LOL) If I can stand and sing in front of a group of people and make them feel something, then I did my job right.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would definitely say my brand new single “Good Mistake to Make”! It’s fun, sassy, and a little sexy at the surface. If you go a little deeper with it though, it’s about taking chances and wearing your heart on your sleeve even though you might crash and burn. AND some pretty amazing people wrote this song — Hillary Lindsey, Gordie Sampson, and Troy Verges. I was lucky enough to not only have my original material on my upcoming debut album, but I got the chance to cut songs by killer hit makers like them. I think “Good Mistake to Make” would be a great addition to anyone’s upbeat country summer playlist!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

That’s a really tough question as there are so many amazing artists and bands to choose from! I’m a huge fan of Jessica Mitchell who released new music recently as well! I’ve had the pleasure of running into her a few times and she’s always so kind and super cool. I also love what Tenille Arts is doing right now. I wrote with Tenille on one of my recent trips to Nashville and that girl’s got pipes!! Holy smokes, the talent is just oozing from her. Damhnait Doyle and Cory Tetford are also the top of that list for me. I’m so inspired by them and what they do. Shameless plug — myself, Cory, Damhnait, and a bunch of other super talented and awesome people are performing at The Cameron House June 9th! So if you’re in Toronto, you should check it out!
