Five Questions With HMLT

Mississauga based brother duo, HMLT is made up of  Corey and Taylor. The two recently released their EP, buu, so it was the perfect time to catch up with them for one of our Five Questions With segments. Learn all about this electronic duo. Enjoy!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Taylor: We are two brothers from Mississauga and we go by the name HMLT.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Taylor: Corey is the brains, he produces all the beats and does all the instrumentation. I cover the vocals, handle the rhythm section, and look good. When it comes to writing music we don’t think about it too much, it’s just something we did everyday growing up and continue to do. We’ve always enjoyed and shared the same musical taste and we’re just trying to make music that we love.

Corey: The EP we just released, ‘buu’, is pretty electronic but we come from a band background. So we always try to incorporate live elements whenever we can. Our next EP is going to be for the hip-hop heads and the one after that very moody and soulful. We also still have some experimental full band songs we’re gonna release one day as well, maybe, actually I don’t know (laughs).

We don’t want to keep ourselves in one category so each of our following EPs will have a certain sound and aesthetic that will be totally different from each other.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Corey: May 7th at The Poetry Jazz Café in Kensington Market. We’re doing a charity event that The Community Creative puts together on the first Sunday of the month. It’s a PWYC and all proceeds go to charity.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Corey: Lav Lav is the single off of our EP, ‘buu’. It’s a catchy song that hopefully reaches a wide array of music listeners. We’re hoping that people won’t be able to pin the song to a specific genre. It’s electronic but there are also so many live elements as well. It feels soulful at first but breaks off into a light disco ending.

Taylor: Yeah, the song really characterizes a variety of different elements in our music – a mellow groove that grows dynamically into a soulful big sound.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
