Five Questions With Kayla Diamond

We recently premiered the new single, “Carnival Hearts” from Toronto, ON based pop artist, Kayla Diamond on Canadian Beats, which is an absolutely wonderful track. Kayla is working on her upcoming EP, Beautiful Chaos and we cannot wait to hear what else she is offering up. We had the chance to conduct a Five Questions With segment with this lovely up & comer recently. Enjoy!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello Canadian Beats! I’m Kayla Diamond, a pop artist from Toronto. I am the winner of Slaight Music’s 2015 “It’s Your Shot” Contest and have been working with Slaight and Cadence Music Group ever since. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to have a career in music, and I am over the moon to be able to do so.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

My writing style is a bit “out of the box” in the sense that I tend to delve into my weird side (i.e. my obsession with abandoned amusement parks). Much of my writing process revolves around listening to my surroundings, paying attention to common phrases people use, and listening to what is currently popular on the radio. Another thing that is key for me when writing pop music is to develop my own kind of “formula”. When I write a song, I make sure to have two hooks (catchy parts)- what I mean by this is that there is a part for me as the singer to perform, and the part for my listeners to sing. To me, it is extremely important that my audience be able to grasp the chorus in one listen and be able to participate in the song.

What can fans expect from your upcoming EP, Beautiful Chaos?

Much of my EP is conceptual, using many metaphors to describe life situations and the feelings that humans experience during tough, joyous, or even devastating circumstances. I will say, that each song is inspired by a different person in my life (or no longer in my life), telling their/our story. On the EP, each song description will have the initials of the person who inspired it, because it is important to acknowledge how their experiences and they themselves have personally affected me.

What does 2017 have in store for you?

This is a bit of a tricky question! In all honesty, I have stopped trying to predict where any year will take me since 2015, when I started law school thinking that I was going to be a Crown prosecutor. What I do know, is that I am very excited for everyone to hear what I have spent the past year working on, and I hope this year brings more music and lots of performances!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Some really great music comes out of Canada, so it’s hard not to write a 10 page fan girl essay. I think so many Canadian artists have proven themselves to be game-changers worldwide, and I have a lot of love and respect for artists who have done that like Leonard Cohen, Rush, Grimes, Drake, The Weeknd, and K-OS.
