Show Review – Mother Mother

Who: K.Flay and Mother Mother
When: March 25 2017
Where: Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver BC
Genre: Grunge,Rap, Pop, Rock&Roll

Vancouver’s favorite live music venue, The Commodore Ballroom, played host to an energy fueled night of grooving, crowd pleasing, rock, rap and pop fusion on Saturday night with K Flay opening for the hometown favorites Mother Mother.

K.Flay has a unique raspy voice and a style of music that kind of covers Rap, a little Punk, and Hard Alternative Rock. Her performance reminded me of Rage against the machine at times with Her politically motivated lyrics and heavy head banging riffs, other songs had a reggae feel to them though which seemed reminiscent of Sublime. Her Rapping roots really stand out. It’s K.Flay on lead vocals, a Drummer, and a Bass/Guitar Player that comprised the lineup and they sounded tight. They pounded out a nine song set including Black Wave and High Enough from the upcoming album Every Where Is Some Where. They had the attention of the majority of the crowd in attendance that night which is not always the case for opening bands at The Commodore. With four bars inside and a wide open floor, the openers can often end up being the background to loud happy groups of socializers that are really just there to see the headliners. The lighting was quite dark and moody for their set, but that was under instruction from the band to match the feel of the music that night and it paid compliment in just the right way.

Mother Mother have become hometown favorites in Vancouver! Originally from Quadra Island which is a few hours and a couple of ferry rides away, the five piece Pop-Alternative Rockers played their first of five sold out nights at the Commodore in support of their new album No Culture. They started this tour out on the east coast of Canada and have hit towns big and small as they worked their way out west and next, south of the border for twelve shows in the United States.

They started off with “Free”, which is the lead off track on the new album and it got the crowd moving! I was in the pit snapping photos for the first three songs of the show and the euphoric feeling of great music and good vibes spread quickly across the historic bouncing floor behind me. Lead singer and guitarist Ryan Guldemond has a definite presence on stage, not just through his musicianship but his tall frame and David Bowie/Sting rockstar looks. His Sister Molly plays keyboards in the band and teamed up frequently for vocal duets with Jasmin Parkin her fellow keyboardist. Ali Siadat and Mike Young complete the team on drums and bass respectively. After playing “Wrecking Ball” off their second album, Ali treated us to a killer drum solo that made me think that he might be a fan of Neil Peart! Next was “Hayloft”, also off the second album, and that morphed into a ripping version of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” belted out by Keyboardist Jasmin Parkin. “Get Out Of The Way” fired up and the crowd was really jumping! Leader of the band Ryan had everyone eating out of his hands. The band finished off the set and then headed backstage as the lights stayed dim. The crowd chanted hard for an encore and a couple minutes later Mother Mother took the stage again to play fan favorites “Ghosting” and “Simply”. A huge applause for the hometown gang and the harsh house lights came back on. Overall it was a fantastic show and the 20-40ish aged crowd seemed to have really enjoyed themselves singing and dancing along for the evening.
