Ontario based artist, Marcio Novelli is about to release his EP, The Reimagining, Vol 1 on March 31, so when we got the chance to speak with him for a segment of Five Questions With, and also premiere his new single, “Holding On”, we jumped at the chance. Give the single a listen, and check out our interview with him below.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi everyone! I’m a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, filmmaker, podcaster, entrepreneur, full-time dad, workaholic and professional basket case… Nice to meet you!
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I’ve been songwriting since elementary school and it’s always served as a form of therapy for me. I’ve written everything from folk to heavy metal to electronica and everything in between but my style as a solo artist is the truest representation of who I am and what comes out of me when I sit down to write with my acoustic guitar in arms and an empty notebook in front of me.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performances?
I’ll be announcing Canadian tour dates in the coming months so make sure to keep your eyes peeled to my website, twitter, facebook and instagram for details. In support of my new acoustic EP, The Reimagining, Vol. 1, I’ll be performing solo with just a guitar and a microphone. Once my upcoming second full-length album is ready, I’ll be hitting the stage with my band to help fully realize the songs live. I’ve also got a few other surprises up my sleeve… As a solo artist, I don’t need to answer to anyone so I can experiment with different arrangements and keep things interesting.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
It would be a tie between “Doctor, Please” and “Better” which are both fan favourites. The first features Chris Steele of Alexisonfire on bass guitar while the latter includes lyrics that a number of fans have tattooed on their skin. I’m really excited to share the stripped down versions of both songs that are featured on my new EP which comes out March 31st.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so, who are your current favourite Canadian bands / artists?
This is a difficult one to narrow down because there’s so much talent in this country but I’d have to say Tegan & Sara have had my heart for well over a decade with no signs of letting go. As the co-host of Bridge The Atlantic – a web-show & podcast featuring independent artists from around the world – I have interviewed several fantastic Canadian musicians and I strongly urge you to go check them out.
