Tanya Tagaq and Buffy Sainte-Marie Release Polaris Collaboration

The Polaris Music Prize debuted its second collaboration session yesterday, which featured the incredible pairing of 2015 winner Buffy Sainte-Marie, and 2014 winner Tanya Tagaq. The song, You Got to Run (Spirit of the Wind) was written by Sainte-Marie and inspired by champion dogsled racer George Attla. You can listen now on Stingray Music and YouTube.

The purpose behind the Polaris Collaboration Sessions is to bring two nominees together to create a brand new piece of music. As this was the first time that Tagaq and Sainte-Marie had worked together, this project also gives music fans the chance to see collaborations they wouldn’t necessarily get the chance to experience.

“It reminded me of growing up in Nunavut,” explains Tagaq. “Sometimes when things get difficult you have to pick yourself up, you can’t let things bring you down. You could take it to be an anti-suicide message. I really appreciate its powerful lyrics.”
